I. Coordination of Academic Programs (75%)

The UC Merced Community and Labor Center seeks an Academic Coordinator II/ Assistant Director with a background in community, labor, or leadership studies. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Academic Coordinator II will develop and lead programmatic development for Community and Labor Center- Organized Research Unit staff. The Academic Coordinator II will supervise some staff members, such as a business officer, human resources analyst, administrative officer, as well as coordinate a paid summer student internship program.

The Academic Coordinator II will engage with Community and Labor Center staff, faculty and students to assess staffing needs for building the center’s internal capacity for worker rights applied research, public education and public service. The Academic Coordinator II will plan and develop funding proposals, job postings, job searches, and leadership development for center staff at all levels of experience.

The Academic Coordinator II will liaise with multiple collaboratives, including the center and diverse regional stakeholders, such as community-based organizations, labor unions, environmental justice groups, and local and state public agencies, in order to assess the need for center education, research and public service. The Academic Coordinator II will be responsible for keeping center leadership informed, engaged, and organized to align programmatic development across applied research, education and public service.

II. Professional Competence and Activity (15%)

The Academic Coordinator II will collaborate with center faculty and other campus academics in the development of working papers, publications, and funding opportunities to advance the intellectual and scholarly missions of the Community and Labor Center, any programs engaged with the Worker Resource Center, and UC Merced.

III. University and Public Service (10%)

The Academic Coordinator II will also participate in the administration of the Community and Labor Center through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation. The Academic Coordinator II will also represent the center in their capacity as the assistant director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications

Master’s degree (in community, labor, or leadership studies)
Minimum of ten years of work experience in applied research and/or public education

Preferred qualifications

Experience conducting public education targeting low-income workers and residents
Experience convening community-based organizations
Experience working with labor unions
