We capture learnings from across this network to mobilize resources, advance policy change, and lay the groundwork for stronger community health systems nationally.


Position Overview

This is a leadership role responsible for developing and managing PIH's programs, accompaniment and technical advising work in Chicago and the surrounding areas. The Director will drive strategy, set organizational and programmatic goals for PIH-US's work in Chicago, and lead a hybrid team of 6-8 people. The Director will lead and expand upon PIH’s anchor partnerships in Chicagoland, including with community based organizations, city and state government, public health programs, and philanthropy. In addition, the Director will collaborate with PIH-US colleagues across the United States, to bring learnings and insights from Chicago to national advocacy and communications initiatives and take PIH-US cross-site learnings to Chicago; the Director will sit on PIH-US's senior leadership team.


Responsibilities:

Chicago strategy development and resource mobilization (40%)

  • In close collaboration with the PIH-US Director of Programs and Executive Director, define an ambitious vision for PIH-US’s work within Chicago, lead ongoing strategy development, continually identifying new opportunities for PIH to add value and maximize impact in Chicagoland
    • Expand and strengthen the PIH Community Health Accelerator program: Expand and strengthen PIH-US's programmatic and advising offerings for partner organizations supporting Community Health Organizers (CHOs)
    • Identify new opportunities for increasing number of CHOs in Chicagoland, maintaining strong working relationships, and managing communication channels to ensure continuity and transparency across community organization and government stakeholders
  • Maintain, and strengthen the Health Justice Learning Community, open to all, across sectors by building on collaborative relationships with city, state and community technical, advisory and programmatic partners to support ongoing and emerging health equity and community health needs
  • Develop and sustain a resource mobilization plan to deepen and expand PIH’s work in Chicagoland
  • Collaborate with PIH-US Director of Programs and Director of Partnerships to steward fundraising efforts for PIH-US's work in Chicago, including assessing funding opportunities, contributing to proposal writing and budget development, and building and stewarding relationships with regional and local funders

Chicago program and team management (40%)

  • Manage and lead a team of 5-7 individuals with overall budget of up to $3M
  • Provide strategic leadership, staff coaching, and administrative and managerial oversight in line with PIH workplace values
  • Develop staffing strategy and continually assess recruiting priorities to meet Chicago team need
  • Guide and support implementation of ongoing workstreams, including the Community Health Organizer Accelerator and the Learning Community
  • Lead site project budget management, tracking Chicago-specific grants and spending, with support from PIH finance, grants and compliance teams
  • Evaluate project performance using appropriate KPIs and project metrics, in collaboration with PIH-US monitoring & evaluation team

National PIH-US strategy and communications (20%)

  • Serve as a member of the PIH-US leadership team, ensuring strategic and operational alignment with PIH-US learning, advocacy and communications priorities and programming
  • Collaborate with PIH-US communications team to tell the story of our work in Chicago for multiple audiences
  • Serve as spokesperson for PIH-US in both internal and external engagement, including collaborating with and providing external reporting to funders and other partners, and contributing learnings and insights within PIH-US and PIH networks
  • Engage in national PIH-US advocacy and coalition-building efforts to advance the broader movement for health equity in the U.S.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in public health, public administration of related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience in public health, nonprofit management, health program implementation and/or consulting, including experience managing a team
  • Proven track record within the public health and/or community health landscape and among key stakeholders in Chicago
  • Strategically minded, able to think creatively around program objectives and the detailed steps necessary to achieve these goals
  • Experience stewarding donor relationships, both on grant management and new resource mobilization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to concisely communicate complex ideas in a manner that builds buy-in among diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in fast-paced environment and handle competing priorities simultaneously
  • Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills and ability to build strong professional relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, qualitative and quantitative analytical capabilities
  • Entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated through prior experience working in start-up like environments building new teams or programs and/or flexibility in the face of rapidly evolving scope of work and new challenges
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Demonstrated commitment to health equity and social justice
