Job description
Manages daily farming operations at NW Michigan Horticultural Research Center. Responsibilities include performing general farm operation, assisting with implementation, management, and maintenance of all research projects; maintains operational records, assists with oversight of maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. Interacts regularly with faculty, researchers, students, vendors, growers and community. Other job responsibilities include pruning and training tree fruits and vines, irrigation and fertilization management, regular maintenance (Integrated Pest Management (IPM)) of tree fruit and wine grapes, upkeep of grounds and operations of a 137-acre farm in Leelanau County. Works closely with on-station staff and campus-based researchers.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in agricultural Science or Crop and Soil Science, horticulture; one to three years of related and progressively more expansive work experience in supervision, and expansive work experience in horticultural, specialty fruit crops, field production knowledge of crops and farm equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Three to five years of related to expansive work experience in specialty fruit crops field production; and knowledge of farm equipment. Two or more years work or educational experience with fruit crop horticultural and pest management practices. Experience working with environmental and occupational health regulatory issues is desired.
