Position Summary

The University of New Mexico School of Law invites applications for one or two full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position to teach in its Legal Analysis and Communication Program, starting in the Fall of 2023.

Faculty in the Program are responsible for teaching Elements of Legal Argumentation (ELA) I & II, the Law School’s required first-year legal writing sequence. ELA I & II focus on developing students’ skills in legal research, analysis, and communication. The Program’s faculty typically teach two first-year sections of 15-20 students each (or 30-40 students total). The Program’s faculty also teach upper-level writing courses, and the successful candidate will be expected to help design and implement the Program’s upper-level writing curriculum. Faculty in the Program serve on all Law School committees (including serving as chairs of committees), and are eligible for summer research and teaching grants. The Legal Analysis and Communication Program is a director-led program that values close collaboration and quality teaching.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Candidates must possess a J.D. or equivalent legal degree

  • Two years of post-J.D. legal work experience


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Demonstrated research and writing ability

  • Demonstrated interest in working one-on-one with first year law students to improve their writing skills

  • Experience in teaching legal analysis in a law school or other professional setting

  • Demonstrated ability to represent the interest of a client in writing

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other faculty members or other professional colleagues

  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose writing problems

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equality, inclusion, and student success
