The University of New Mexico High School Equivalency Program (UNM HEP) is designed to assist migrant and seasonal agricultural workers and their immediate family members in obtaining their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. UNM HEP is federally funded by the US Department of Education under the Office of Migrant Education.
UNM HEP offers an intensive holistic HSE course for qualifying participants each year. UNM HEP is seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic, positive individual who will provide instruction for HEP participants to attain their HSE diploma. The HSE instructor provides basic reading, writing, social studies, math, and science through online and in person classes. The instructor will need to be able to travel to teaching sites in a University vehicle and possibly at times in a personal vehicle as needed. The instructor will not be limited to teaching; they will be an active participant in the implementation of the HEP grant. This includes providing guidance to the HEP tutors, assisting in retention efforts, and providing workshops outside of the classroom. UNM HEP also hosts social and cultural activities for the students, and the instructors participate in the creation, development and facilitation of said activities. The instructor will design, evaluate, and implement curriculum for the UNM HEP intensive English & Spanish HSE courses that includes adult learning theory and methodologies. Finally, the ability to communicate proficiently in English and Spanish (Written and Spoken) will be key to be an effective instructor.
Position Summary & Duties/Responsibilities
- Advise, test, and teach adult students the HSE subjects
- Administer instructional materials to HEP participants
- Record attendance and services rendered to students
- Facilitate meetings targeting student retention & tutor training
- Gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
- Train, mentor and guide HEP tutors
- Develop and present educational programs and/or workshops
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

- May require valid NM State teaching license in secondary education in a specific area of expertise as appropriate.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Experience and willingness to work in teams and collaboratively
- Experience working with out-of-school young adults.
- Knowledge of and experience working with ABE programs specifically HiSET.
- Knowledge of college/university admissions process.
- Experience working with migrant/seasonal farm-working populations.
- Knowledge of Google tools (drive, forms, sheets, and more)
- Knowledge of Online MS tools (One Drive, teams, notes and office)
- Knowledge of Zoom
