HOPEhouse operates on a 10 month, 180 school day basis every September through June for students between the ages of 17-22. At HOPEhouse each young adult benefits from the opportunity to progress through experience while living in a group, working together and learning independent living skills with peers in a home-like supportive environment. The shared expertise of our Special Education Teacher, Transition Specialist, Professional Staff, HOPEhouse Consultants and Families help enable young adults to achieve their highest learning potential and level of independence while maintaining and developing ties within their home communities in preparation for a successful transition to life beyond high school. HOPEhouse is fully approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Childcare (EEC).Hours for this position are Monday through Friday, beginning at 8:00am and ending at 4:00pm; with flexibility based on the need of all the young adults enrolled in HOPEhouse at Cotting School.Responsibilities: 1.Instruct HOPEhouse students in assigned areas of functional work.Implement curriculum as designed and differentiated as appropriate for young adults.2.Provide for a program environment in which learning is an ongoing and positive experience.3.Maintain an individualized approach to each young adult's education.4.Develop, implement and oversee a transitional curriculum focused on educating young adults with how to maximize independence in the areas of daily living skills and personal care. Programming includes: Personal Care, Learning to Direct a Personal Care Attendant, Medication Administration, Health & Well-Being, Menu Planning, Cooking, Household Chores, Food & Pharmacy Shopping, Learning to Live in a Group/Conflict Resolution, House Meeting Forum, Independent Transportation, Recreation & Leisure-Planning & Activities, Social Skills, Functional Budgeting, Organizational Skills, Calendar & Email, Laundry, and all other areas of daily living. 5.Develop, implement and oversee a transitional curriculum focused on assisting young adults who may be ready for the next step in their high school education. This programming could include exploring higher education in a local community college setting or could include exploring meaningful community work or volunteer opportunities.6.Communicate effectively with parents, administrators and other faculty members as necessary for the educational needs of the young adults.7.Develop educational goals and objectives which reflect accurately the realistic learning style and needs of each young adult assigned to a class.8.Maintain a professional level of knowledge and skill with regard to subject matter, teaching methods and the physical, emotional and educational needs of young adults assigned.9.Serve as a positive role model for all young in terms of manner, appearance, attitude and knowledge.10.Maintain effective program management within and without the program.11.Supervise program assistants and other direct care personnel in the program.
Work with the Program Director to ensure consistent and adequate supervision of all direct care staff.12.Work closely with the Program Director and program assistants to ensure smooth transition of services from shift to shift13. Maintain professional growth through regular attendance at in-service session workshops, seminars, conferences, and meetings.14.Attend staff meetings, case reviews, etc., as needed.15.Maintain and provide quarterly progress reports on each young adult as requested.16.Respond on a timely basis to all administrative requests for materials, meetings, information and the like.17.Assist with personal care and medication administration, as needed.Additional Responsibilities: 1.Share in those routine and necessary supervisory and other tasks normally associated at HOPEhouse at Cotting School with the duties of all teachers. Included among these tasks but not limited to these alone may be such matters as supervision of students while arriving and leaving school, supervision or feeding of student(s) during meals or at other stated times as may be necessary, chaperoning special events or community activities. 2.
Participate in social events that involve the entire program and are planned as learning opportunities for the young adults and assist as needed3.Act as the Lead Teacher on the HOPEhouse Admissions Team and participate in all admissions processes for young adult referrals being considered for acceptance to the program.
