Title: BOR Archaeology Internship

Start/End Date: 6/12/2023 – 8/25/2023

Stipend: $650/week paid on a bi-weekly basis

Term: 12 weeks

Reports To: Bureau of Reclamation

Location: Grand Junction, CO

Status: 450-hour AmeriCorps Service Term

It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.


Program Overview:

The mission of the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is to manage, develop, and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public. In 2022, the Environmental & Cultural Group identified high volumes of incoming Section 106 of the NHPA projects, such as new trail development, throughout the Grand Junction area, including several at Ridgway State Park. The Group also identified a Section 110 of the NHPA need to conduct additional work in order to determine the eligibility and extent of the Dallas Creek Townsite at Ridgway State Park.


The intern will support cultural management at Ridgway State Park by researching previously recorded cultural resources, conducting cultural resource inventory and limited testing, preparing cultural resource documentation, collaborating on drafting cultural resource consultation letters, and presenting documentation to stakeholders. This research will increase knowledge of the cultural resources that Reclamation manages. This information supports thoughtful resource management, informing future development proposals to ensure they consider their potential impacts to cultural resources. Data from research may also be utilized in future public education.


Essential roles and responsibilities include:

Cultural Resource Survey with Archaeologist

  • Complete background research for the project area, develop field maps, schedule, and prepare equipment
  • Conduct pedestrian survey or other approved survey methods for the project area
  • Record cultural resources in the field: write forms, take photos, record location
  • Download data at the office

Write Cultural Resource Documentation with Archaeologist

  • Essential functions and responsibilities
  • Develop GIS maps for the project area and any documented cultural resources
  • Collaborate on completing cultural resource forms and reports

Draft Consultation Letters with Archaeologist

  • Locate similar letters as a template
  • Draft letters

Present internship results to Reclamation and Colorado Parks and Wildlife

  • Schedule presentation
  • Work with Archaeologist to create presentation
  • Present to stakeholder

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • The position requires an enrolled graduate student in Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Resource Management, or Historic Preservation
  • Experience with archaeological fieldwork is required
  • Students with cultural resource inventory and limited testing, artifact analysis, preparation of cultural resource inventory reports and site forms,
  • GIS proficiency: data collection, site and survey map production, and ArcGIS suite navigation, and Microsoft Word Suite

Requirements:
