Elementary/Middle School Educator

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in specific subject area for middle school, Education, or related field
  • Commitment to development of the whole scholar, including well-being and character, in alignment with the ADW Catholic tradition

Preferred:

  • Experience teaching in a elementary/middle school setting, with demonstrated expertise in differentiated instruction and urban education
  • Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning, preferably with G Suite for Education (Google Apps)
  • Experience fostering relationships with young children and willing to perform duties aligned with school’s mission

The Archdiocese of Washington Elementary School Teacher, Washington DC and Maryland The Archdiocese of Washington (ADW), located in Washington DC and (PG, MC and Southern) Maryland, is seeking elementary school educators to serve within the ADW as spiritual and effective instructional leaders for the 2020-2021 school year. The Catholic elementary school teacher is responsible to deliver instruction that is based on the approved curricula and mission of the school, and to create a safe, orderly and Catholic learning environment for his/her students. At St. Thomas More Catholic Academy our school's mission is to lead, teach, and inspire, reflecting love daily according to the scriptures. We are rooted in building the agency of scholars and educators in order to develop young men and women willing and ready to dismantle systems of oppression and reframe the world to make it more just and humane. Educators that enter are building are willing and ready to meet the needs of all scholars and develop their own craft as an educator with innovative and unique professional developments. The current position for the fifth grade educator will encompass a self-contained class teaching all core content: science, math, language arts, and social studies and if the applicant is catholic religion. Educators for the position must be willing to engage in various forms of learning cohorts and other forms of professional developments. In addition the educator will be able to use data-driven instruction to inspire and engage scholars within a grade-specific language arts classroom. The educator creates innovative lessons, using the Archdiocese of Washington language arts standards, that develop the speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for each scholar to communicate effectively and think critically. He/she fosters an appreciation for all types of literature and encourages scholars to express original ideas. Dedicated to closing the achievement gap while meeting the needs of each individual scholar, he/she regularly utilizes grouping and differentiation. The educator demonstrates cultural sensitivity and promotes collaboration within the classroom. He/she guides the development of scholars academically, spiritually, and socially. Further, the educator is progressive-minded and collaborates with other faculty to develop cross-curricular learning experiences for scholars. Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions*) Uses best educational practices to deliver high-quality instruction in the form of lecture, centers, demonstrations, projects, and discussions Creates innovative and engaging 4-6 week unit/lesson plans based on ADW standards Differentiates and scaffolds lessons based on scholar skill and knowledge levels Uses of variety of formative and summative assessments, including performance-based assessments, to guide instruction Regularly evaluates and tracks student progress through an online gradebook Communicates with parents regarding student progress and behavior through email or by phone Maintains a safe classroom through strong, supportive classroom management Participates in weekly collaboration meetings with other faculty members Attends continuing education classes/professional development opportunities to maintain and improve knowledge and skills Supports, implements, and enhances the Catholic identity of the school Fosters the continued faith development and formation of scholars
