The Position
The Contra Costa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office is seeking an enthusiastic professional who desires an exciting career opportunity as an Agricultural Biologist/Weights and Measures Inspector III. The chosen candidate will work under the direction of a Deputy Agricultural Commissioner. Agricultural Biologist/Weights and Measures Inspector III is the final level in the Agricultural Biologist class series. Incumbents in the Agricultural Biologist/Weights and Measures Inspector III will conduct inspections and investigations in all disciplines and may assist other Agricultural Biologist/Weights and Measures Inspector III and the Deputy Agricultural Commissioner in conducting inspections in all disciplines.

In addition to the base salary, the County offers an excellent benefits plan which includes a county contribution to health insurance, dental and vision insurance plans. Other benefits also offered by the County include:
  • $150 per month to an employee’s account in the Contra Costa County Deferred Compensation Plan for permanent employees who meet specific criteria
  • $275 Safety shoe reimbursement for each two-year period
  • Effective July 1, 2023, the base rate of pay will be increased by five percent (5%)
  • $200 per month salary differential for bilingual pay if designated by the appointing authority
  • 2.5 % longevity pay differential after 10 years of service in Contra Costa County

Minimum Qualifications

Licenses Required:
1) Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. Out of State valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License will be accepted during the application process.
2) Must possess a total of eight (8) licenses issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture as follows: all five (5) County Agricultural Biologist licenses: Pesticide Regulation, Investigation and Environmental Monitoring, Integrated Pest Management, Commodity Regulation, Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation; And, all three (3) County Weights and Measures Inspector Licenses: Weight Verification, Measurement Verification, and Transaction and Product Verification.

Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience as an Agricultural Biologist II or a Weights and Measures Inspector II in Contra Costa County, or the equivalent in another California County.

Special Requirements: Positions involved in various device inspections that must obtain a California Commercial Class “C” Driver’s License with a Hazardous Materials Endorsement are required to undergo and pass a drug and alcohol test to operate the county’s HAZMAT Placarded vehicles and trailers, and are subject to random drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation and in accordance to the County Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy. Positions involved in large capacity device inspection are required to have a valid California Class “A” Driver’s License with a Hazardous Materials Endorsement. Inspectors may be required to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to perform required inspections at certain locations.


Selection Process

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Virtual Oral Exam: The Oral Exam will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. In the Oral Exam, candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies, as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. These may include, but are not limited to: Displaying Ownership and Accountability, Professional Integrity and Ethics, and Teamwork.

The Oral Interview is tentatively scheduled to take place, remotely, October 27 - 31, 2022
The video assessment will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment, as well as computer or mobile device with a camera.

Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process.
