The Analytical Lab Chemist works to ensure the laboratories integrity through multiple quality control methods. Will assess and monitor lab systems, summarize the success through audits and ensures compliance with historical and current methodologies.

Responsibilities May Include

Participate in daily safety activities.

Maintain and support LIMS as the backup to the LIMS analyst when needed.

Evaluate compliance of Standard Operating Procedures with referenced published methods and Identify deviations between them.

Keep informed of updates and changes to published methods and any potential impacts on SOP’s.

Identify opportunities to optimize laboratory testing to provide the most value and reduce or eliminate low value testing.

Uphold and improve laboratory capabilities/functionality.

Drive working for the greater good by upholding and improving laboratory/operations relations and assist with troubleshooting any system related issues when possible.

Participate in interlaboratory, and external, audits of laboratory procedures.

Provide analytical support as needed throughout the lab.

Required Qualifications

Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry

Knowledge of safe laboratory practices, refinery process, and samples

Computer proficient with Outlook, Word, Excel

Preferred Qualifications

5 or more years of relevant laboratory experience in the refining industry

Strong analytical skills with verbal and written communication abilities

Attention to detail and problem-solving skills

Ability to maintain a consistent teamwork mentality

The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
