Job description
Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by overseeing all operations and programming for the Shaw Outdoor Center (SOC); managing the Shapiro Field House climbing wall; overseeing the Paine Mountain trail system; and maintaining recreation equipment inventory. Recreation programs prioritize student engagement and development as well as engagement opportunities for the entire university community and the local community.
Salary: $48,000/year or more, depending on experience.
Essential Functions
- Oversees the management of all student recreation programming.
- Manages the recreation budget in accordance with university policies.
- Develops marketing, program guidelines, policies and procedures related to all recreation and programming.
- Establishes criteria for creating new programs and special events in keeping with student and community interest, current trends, and best practices.
- Assists with mentorship and administrative oversight for the Campus Activities Board and NUCC S-5 Staff Section with specific responsibility for delivering on and off campus recreation programming.
- Works collaboratively with the Campus Activities Board, Counseling & Wellness Center, DEI & Title IX Office, and other campus groups to enhance educational opportunities and to program on and off campus events.
- Negotiates and executes vendor and talent contracts for campus events.
- Oversees safe and secure recreation facilities for customers and staff.
- Communicates with Facility Operations for any ground work that needs to be done.
- Develops and implements customer service policies, systems and training programs that provide for positive, timely, safe, and knowledgeable recreation services and facilities.
- Coordinates the purchase of equipment, maintain, and replace inventory, and review specifications and best practices
- Serves as liaison to visitors, vendors, and contractors for the SOC and climbing wall.
- Serves a liaison to Facilities & Operations, Institutional Technology Services, and other campus departments developing preventative maintenance plans for recreation facilities as well as enhancements to meet growing needs.
- Develops and implements policies, systems, and training programs for proper use of recreation facilities and equipment.
- Oversees the Shaw Outdoor Center staff, including the Student Manager and Student Assistant Manager, in accordance with university guidelines.
- Manages access, maintains certifications, and manages climbing equipment inventory for the Shapiro Field House climbing wall.
- Develops and evaluates short and long-term planning strategies and policies related to facility development.

- Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
- Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
- Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
- Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Exercise Physiology, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, Counseling & Student Affairs, or a related field preferred.
- 3 years of professional experience within a student involvement, student affairs, leadership development or recreation setting is preferred
- Possess or be able to obtain American Red Cross AED, CPR and First Aid certification required.
- Instructor certification from a national organization (SOLO, NOLS, American Red Cross, etc) preferred.
- Possess one or more professional fitness certifications such as NASM, NSCA, ACE, ACSM, AFAA preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
- Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 45 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus
- Work some evening or weekend hours
- Travel as needed (public or private transportation)
Environmental Conditions
- Indoor work at a computer workstation and athletic facility, and outdoor work
- Medium level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
