Job SummaryThe Department of Art at Radford University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Art. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment with a starting date in August, 2023.
The Department seeks a Foundations Coordinator who is student-centered, collaborative, and energetic. The Department’s set of core courses – known as “Foundations” – is comprised of 3D Art, 2D Art, and Drawing I. The Foundations Coordinator is expected to provide pedagogical leadership and curricular vision for these courses and their instructors. An ability to spark curiosity, instill studio habits, and inspire experimentation in students is desired for the position. Candidates should be prepared to teach sections of 3D Art and Sculpture I. Other teaching opportunities may exist in Foundations or in the Department’s MFA program. Opportunities may also exist to develop upper-level courses in sculpture or in its expanded field, including but not limited to installation, performance art, and social practice. The Foundations Coordinator organizes and teaches the Department’s first-year seminar each fall semester. Candidates should be knowledgeable of research on first-year experiences, high-impact practices, and retention strategies. As a tenure-track position, candidates should be prepared to perform effectively in teaching, creative scholarship, and service.
The Department of Art is NASAD accredited with BFA , BS, BA, and MFA degrees. The Department’s primary programs are studio art, graphic design, art education, and art history & museum studies. 11 full-time and several part-time faculty members serve a diverse student body of about 200 majors, of which 30% are first-generation students, 30% identify as a minority or bi-racial, and 40% are in financial need. The department plays a major role in the cultural life of campus and the community. It has an annual artist-in-residence program, visiting artist series, and numerous internal and external exhibitions at the Radford University Art Museum. The new faculty member will join the department at one of its most historic moments. Currently in construction and set to open in Fall 2024, the Artis Center for Adaptive Innovation and Creativity will house the entire College of Visual & Performing Arts. At 178,000 square feet, the Artis Center will be the largest academic building on campus and will host innovative teaching spaces based on the integration of the arts, health sciences, and technology. The center will have art studios, design labs, digital labs, makerspaces, virtual and augmented reality labs, performance venues, clinical simulation training suites, and general classrooms. Downtown Radford is home to a variety of locally-owned shops and restaurants. Nearby cities of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Floyd, and Roanoke also add to the region’s cultural vibrancy. Farther afield, Radford is located a few hours from Asheville and Charlotte, NC; Knoxville, TN; Richmond, VA; and Washington, DC.

Required Qualifications
A terminal degree in studio art.
Preferred Qualifications
MFA with an emphasis in sculpture or related 3D media. Preference given to candidates with:
Strong foundational skills, indicating the ability to teach 3D Art, 2D Art, and/or Drawing I.
Teaching experience at the college level.
Experience with curriculum and/or course development in Foundations or related studio courses.
Record of effectiveness in teaching/mentoring, creative scholarship, and service.
Education
A terminal degree in studio art.
