Education: North Dakota Elementary Superintendent’s credential as well as earned doctorate in education or related field is preferred.
Experience: Administrative experience in elementary education and district-wide administrative responsibilities in a medium or large school system. Title and federal grant experience is preferred.
Job Goal: To lead and guide the overall operation of the schools, giving direction and supervision to the educational program, developing and implementing school district policies, and carrying out the directives of the Superintendent of Schools.
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
Leadership
- Assist in District planning initiatives
- Lead organizational change including but not limited to:
- Cultural Competency
- Applicable professional development directed by data
- Intervention programs with demonstrable results for all students
- Oversee procured grants
- Lead elementary principal meetings; develop and lead Joint Administrators meetings
- Interpret current trends, issues, and practices in education for application at the local level
- Organize and direct efforts to realize the District’s Strategic Plan
- Oversee district and school accreditation
- Participate in local, state and national professional organizations
- Represent the District in civic organizations
Administration
- Advise the Superintendent and School Board on school issues
- Participate in the organization and activities of the School Board (ie: Board committee work)
- Implement the policies of the School Board
- Plan budgets and guide expenditures related to schools
- Monitor and advise on facilities planning and maintenance issues in schools
- Facilitate the Stay in School Diversion meetings
- Oversee and direct federal programs as assigned
- Oversee the completion local, state, and federal reports
- Review and approve research projects
- Assist with enrollment projections, staffing allocations, and staff transfer requests/boundary line decisions
- Respond to parent/community requests/concerns
Curriculum and Instruction
- Provide a diverse co-curricular program for all students
- Collaborate with the Special Education Department and other agencies to provide alternative programs for students
- Provide student achievement and assessment procedures
- Assess all programs in schools
- Plan staff development activities designed to maximize student learning and teacher effectiveness
Communications
- Support the implementation of public relations efforts in the schools
- Maintain communications with building and District personnel
- Work with community organizations and media to ensure accurate and current communications
- Collaborate with other educational and social agencies and the community
- Encourage and promote parent involvement in the schools
- Provide appropriate written communications for the School Board, principals, directors, and staff
Terms of Employment: Initial twelve month contract (a vacation of 26 working days each year); other terms agreed upon with the Superintendent of Schools, subject to approval by the School Board. Renewable under contract agreements with the Superintendent of Schools.
Supervisory Responsibility: Responsible for recruitment, selection, supervision, evaluation and termination of the following positions: Elementary School Principals, Director of Special Services, Director of Head Start, Native American Liaison, 21st Century Encore Coordinator, Assistant Superintendent Secretary, District Mental Health Coordinator, District Grant Writer, and Elementary Summer School personnel (Summer School Director).
Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others.
Evaluation: By the Superintendent of Schools at least twice each year in the first three years of service (December 15 and April 15), and at least once each year thereafter (April 15).
