Responsibilities

Associate Director for Science & Technology, Defense Space
Draper is conducting a nationwide search for a highly innovative individual to lead our Defense Space Science & Technology (S&T) organization. The successful candidate will run a program team focused on pioneering technology solutions and mission-critical capability development. Responsibilities will include business-area S&T strategic planning, business development, proposal generation and program management - in addition to hiring, staff development and day-to-day team leadership activities. The ideal candidate will have expertise in transitioning basic scientific R&D efforts into technology programs, and into engineering & product development. The candidate will also have expertise in architecting complex defense systems, and a thorough understanding of technology development program planning - including mapping of system-level performance requirements to S&T development needs. A background in program shaping, customer engagement and capture is required.
U.S. security clearance required.

Defense Space S&T strategic planning:
The Associate Director (AD) will assist the Draper Space enterprise in generating and maintaining a strategic plan for Defence Space S&T at Draper, including IR&D investment and facilities planning, technology transition planning, strategic hiring, tracking and preparation of new business areas and customers. The AD will also help coordinate the advanced technology pipeline for Draper Space. Furthermore, the AD will use their technical background to identify and qualify potential science & technology breakthroughs that can lead to revolutionary improvements in operational performance.

Business development and proposal generation:
The AD will develop capture plans, proposal strategies and teaming relationships in pursuit of new business. The AD will qualify and lead key proposals, and develop and manage proposal budgets for pursuits, including development of work statements, schedules, budgets, and the coordination/ evaluation of proposal inputs from engineering staff, resulting in a steady output of white papers and proposals. The AD will regularly interface with customers in order to understand emerging challenges, relate Draper capabilities to address these challenges, and develop and capture relevant programs.

Program management:
The AD will oversee S&T program execution to ensure the cost, schedule, and technical performance meet requirements and customer expectations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • 15+ years of experience desired in organizational leadership, combined with frequent customer interaction.
  • The candidate’s background will include significant experience in R&D planning & execution, and organizational leadership.
  • The applicant can point to examples of design responsibility on fielded or prototyped space instrumentation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required
  • Must be willing to travel
  • U.S. security clearance required
