Career Services strives to educate and empower all students and recent graduates to prepare for and pursue success. We are seeking a dynamic professional to play a major role in the new vision for Career Services at UC Santa Barbara. Career Services helps undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, career counseling, internships, and employment and professional /graduate school options - whether they are building upon a liberal arts education, leveraging their academic preparation in business or engineering, envisioning a future in medicine, or seeking a career in the corporate or nonprofit workforce. Career Services’ vision is to inspire students to explore and gain knowledge of their future goals. By providing programs and resources, our office supports students to attain relevant experience and develop important relationships to address the world's needs and challenges through their work. Career Services, a department of Students Affairs, has 16 staff members and 12 student employees.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Along with the Executive Director, Business Officer, and Associate Director, the Associate Director works as part of the Leadership Team responsible for long-range planning, design, and implementation of Career Services. Understands all aspects of career services management system; suggests changes or improvements as appropriate. Participates in the development, implementation, review and evaluation of career education programs and services. Develops general policy and procedures of the agency, oversees a budget, and hires new staff. The Associate Director establishes vision and oversees all aspects of career education-related efforts and activities by overseeing the career education unit. Uses strategic planning to develop strategies to serve emerging student populations, delivers career education information in ways that resonate with today's students and infuses career readiness into the UCSB culture. Effectively recruits, on-boards, trains and mentors new employees. Leverages the online platform that Career Services uses to connect with students and to collect data and career destinations information. #LI-KA1

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in career counseling, business administration, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills in communicating complex information to both internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, and imagine possibilities for solutions that do not currently exist or are not apparent.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusionary practices.
  • Demonstrated operational skills in common word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience preferably in management, leadership, career counseling, and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of personnel and supervisory practices for creating an effective, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to effectively lead, mentor, manage conflict, and guide staff to enhance performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search strategies. Knowledge of standards set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management including program development, implementation, data collection, assessment and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of labor market and employment trends, both locally and nationally, related to hiring students from a top-tier university.
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing effective working relationships with staff of all levels, faculty, employers and alumni.
  • Experience and proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver career services.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

55% Management & Supervision -

As a member of the Career Services Leadership Team, is responsible for long range planning, design and implementation of Career Services. Formulates, interprets, and refines agency goals ensuring that the diverse students of UCSB are served and their career needs are met. Understands all aspects of the career services management system; suggests changes or improvements. Participates in the development, implementation, review and evaluation of career programs and services. Develops general policy and procedures of the agency, oversees a budget, and makes staffing determinations. Develops, evaluates, and adjusts budgets to maximize use of and track the fiscal resources of programs and events. Conducts need assessments to develop creative and innovative programming to meet the needs of the students, faculty, alumni, employers, and/or other stakeholders. Develops and implements specialized programs to meet the needs and interests of ethnic and other special needs students. Ensures that programs and events are managed effectively and that appropriate resources are available for implementation. Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, evaluates, supervises, and mentors staff. Coordinates professional training and development activities for Career Services staff to include such areas as skill building, motivation, diversity, equity, and inclusion, labor trends, decision-making, and personal/professional development. Ensures proper staff training is aligned with human resources processes and procedures. Effectively manages and guides meetings through the use of agenda management strategies. Seeks out opportunities to expand personal professional knowledge, e.g., serves on committees of professional associations, attends and presents at conferences, and explores advanced formal education opportunities. Spearheads agency outreach efforts through participation in various campus-wide initiatives. Creates and maintains relationships with academic and campus departments to help promote services and programs, to identify and educate career advocates, and to scale services.

20% Career Programs Administration & Evaluation -

Provides career education programming leadership and vision for the career education unit. Designs, executes, and interprets student programs and to ensure they are inclusive and welcoming. Develops and implements systems for assessing the quality and effectiveness of career education programs and services. Establishes programming goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely as well as defines effective student learning outcomes for programs and events. Creates processes and procedures to collect and report data for quarterly and annual reports related to student activity. Makes recommendations based upon results to scale services and provides regular reports to staff. Maintains budgets for programs and events while understanding and using basic accounting techniques for budgeting, monitoring, and processing expenditures and receipts. Demonstrates effective stewardship and use of fiscal resources while following ethical and legal guidelines related to career services' financial resources. Recommends and maintains electronic career development resources including virtual interviewing resources and web resources for job seekers. Utilizes, leverages, and troubleshoots Handshake, UCSB's online job, internship and employer database, to support and deliver services and resources to the university and students. Evaluates such services and resources and suggests use and extent of technological applications. Collaborates on marketing and digital communication strategies to identify and attract students to departmental programs and events based on benchmarking studies.

20% Career Coaching, Advising, and Counseling -

Delivers career coaching/advising/counseling services designed to develop professional relationships with students through a range of approaches, including individual, drop-in, and group appointments, workshops, and other programs. Provides consultation to students and/or alumni on job-search tools and strategies, including resume writing, developing cover letters and job-campaign correspondence, interviewing, networking, and connecting with employers. Identifies, selects, and implements career coaching/advising/counseling interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals, and creates individual learning plans (ILPs) with students. Identifies and uses selected assessment tools and techniques to evaluate effectiveness of services. Administers scores, interprets, reports, and records findings from assessment instruments and recommends appropriate changes. Keeps abreast of current resources and use of career, occupational, and employment information in providing students with career coaching/advising/counseling services.

5% Organizational Involvement -

Participates in staff/professional development meetings and works collaboratively in task groups. Shares relevant professional and career information with other staff members. Engages in training and staff development activities as appropriate. Chairs and serves on search committees. May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
