The Associate Director, Global Initiatives & Communications is responsible for the development, coordination and execution of strategic communications and global events for AbbVie Global Medical Affairs (GMA), which encompasses more than 2,000 employees worldwide. This individual will lead communication efforts, including stakeholder engagement and impact analysis, in support of four therapeutic areas and Operations functions within GMA, while also collaborating with the Director, Communications to pull through key GMA communications and events. This role partners closely with the assigned functional Vice Presidents (VP) and their leadership teams, GMA employees of all levels, and cross-functional stakeholders, to enhance awareness of and engagement with business priorities, signature projects and culture initiatives.
This position is part of a team based in AbbVie's global headquarters in Lake County, IL. Chicago-area candidates are preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Partners with the Director, Global Initiatives & Communications to build and execute an integrated, measurable, multichannel global communications plan for GMA, grounded in stakeholder insights and aligned to GMA's strategic priorities, signature initiatives and cross-functional culture goals.
- Provides Executive Communications support utilizing a multichannel approach to therapeutic area and Global Medical Operations senior leaders, including but not limited to executive presentations (slides, talking points), organizational announcements (timing and cascade), video creation (scripts, talking points, production management), special events or forums (show flow, content creation, logistics planning).
- Provides strategic counsel and communications leadership for change management initiatives and activities impacting assigned functions or broader GMA. This includes audience mapping, implementation and evaluation of change management communications.
- Supports communications on high profile projects, that may have an impact broader than GMA.
- Partners with the GMA Culture Team to drive culture initiatives and communications, including but not limited to Award and Recognition programs, Employee Giving Campaign and Equity, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EED&I) initiatives.
- Leads measurement planning and ongoing reporting of communications effectiveness, and proactively proposes enhancements to current and future initiatives.
- Strong contributor to the maintenance of a master GMA communication calendar and regular team meetings to manage timing and flow of communications.
- Maintains a strong understanding of best practices in organizational, change management and employee communications, both internal and external, and brings innovative ideas to the GI&C team to enhance GMA communications.
- Consistently communicates to an executive level in an accurate, regular, concise, and inclusive manner.
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Integrated Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or equivalent.
- 9 + years of communications, change management and project management experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with knowledge of emerging communication trends and technologies; proven experience conveying business objectives and leadership perspective into high quality written communications.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to anticipate company and team needs and make connections to advance business deliverables.
- Ability to lead without direct authority and excel in a matrixed environment and independently drive to deliver on business objectives with senior leaders and teams; global/international experience a plus.
- Confident and proactive bringing definition and scope to vague problem statements and prioritizing and problem solving in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail while maintaining focus on the big picture.
- Confidence and strong presentation skills providing communications subject matter expertise to senior leaders.
- Extensive experience with performance measurement and communication (e.g., metrics, dashboards).
