RESULTS STATEMENT
The Shop Mechanic will independently provide high quality, detailed, and professional, mechanical support to all BSS employees by helping to ensure all mechanical equipment needed to provide a superior product are in perfect working order, clean, and are ready for use at a moment’s notice. The Shop Mechanic will be directly involved with field operations in order to prioritize all incoming projects to produce repair efficiency, sometimes in the field and possibly in inclement weather. The Shop Mechanic’s customers are BSS employees!
TACTICAL WORK
- Inspect, test, diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance all BSS vehicles, machines and equipment (diesel, propane and gasoline) including but not limited to:

- Mowers
- Snow blowers
- Vehicles
- Trailers
- Snowplows
- 4-Wheelers
- Trimmers
- Various pieces of equipment and small engines
- Create, clearly communicate, and accurately document a plan of action and/or options for all repairs
- Stay well within budget parameters and take a strategic approach to maximize equipment while minimizing cost
- Track inventory and order new supplies when necessary, such as bulk gas, fluids, common parts, etc.
- Accurately forecast necessary supplies and equipment for the upcoming year
- Perform duties with minimal supervision
- Keep very accurate service records of time and materials, and create/maintain a maintenance schedule for all pieces of equipment.
- Handle credit card receipts in a timely fashion and perform light admin duties to make sure all repairs are documented properly for future decisions regarding equipment.
- Create accurate Standard Operating Procedures for all routine work and follow protocols, while following all health and safety laws and guidelines, as well as common sense safety practices, for services such as:

- Dismantling devices to gain access to and remove defective parts
- Performing common field repair that can be taught to all employees using equipment
- Adjusting functional parts of devices and control instruments
- Repairing and replacing defective or worn parts, including welding
- Regularly lubricating and cleaning parts, tools and vehicles
- Reporting and recording an accurate service log
- Keep work space, entire shop and exterior of the shop or “yard” tidy, well organized, safe and clearly labeled so that all tools and supplies are accounted for and are easily accessible
- Play an integral role in establishing parameters for use of equipment and vehicles, educating employees
- Possess ability to apply knowledge to similar equipment
- Determine the financial feasibility of outsourcing versus internally repairing larger projects
- Ability to problem solve efficiently and provide backed up data when equipment needs to be replaced
- Willingness to assist work on any company crew (BSS prefers and provides opportunities for year-round employment)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work at least 40 hours per week, some weekends may be necessary in the winter due to timing of snow storms and equipment needing to be serviced.
- Associate’s degree, vocational/trade school certification, or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification strongly preferred
- A minimum of 3 years experience as a mechanic or 5 years as a mechanic apprentice/assistant
- Experience with gas engines, propane and diesel a plus
- Basic record keeping ability with a strong attention to detail
- Computer literacy and flexibility to learn new programs
- Knowledge of all tools and equipment necessary for the completion of the task, including but not limited to basic hand tools, tire tools, vehicle parts, mower and blower parts, welding, measuring gauges and instruments, electronic and other diagnostic equipment
- Proven mechanical acuity and basic math skills
- Must be reasonably accessible to work locations in the Gallatin Valley
- Age 18 or older
- Flexible schedule when machines break down out of normal working hours (moreso during the winter season, November 1 - April 30)
- Legal, valid, unrestricted, driver's license
- Propane Certification provided at BSS through Northern Energy
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
- Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, running and walking, sitting, pushing, pulling
- Considerable lifting and raising objects up to 70 pounds from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position, to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles
- Fingering, grasping, feeling, sometimes in a repetitive motion
- Talking and hearing
- Subject to changing environmental conditions, both inside the shop and outdoors in inclement weather
