LEAD (Case Manager)
Since 2017, Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) has provided 8th district police officers another tool in their kits when responding to low-level offenses related to unmet behavioral health needs-- and that alternative to arrest is intensive, low-barrier, harm reduction-based case management. Officers are freed up to handle more serious matters, and those who need help receive it in the community, instead continuing to cycle in and out of jail. LEAD is an innovative approach to community safety grounded in the belief that health and wellness requires connection over punishment.
NAMI New Orleans seeks a full-time Case Manager to serve as an active member of our LEAD team. Our LEAD team includes Case Managers and Peer Support Specialists who provide a wide range of non-coercive, client-centered services to assist individuals in accessing and engaging with community-based treatments and supports that promote recovery and resilience. NAMI New Orleans adheres to a “discharge as last resort” and “sustained engagement” philosophy, stressing the importance of trauma-informed care, and a harm reduction philosophy.
Brief Overview of Duties/Responsibilities
- NAMI New Orleans LEAD team consistently provides rapid response and intervention for individuals experiencing or nearing an encounter with NOPD officers in the 8th District. Ensure resolution of immediate needs, de-escalation, and planning for follow-up services within 24-to-48 hours after an initial encounter.
- Provides initial and ongoing assessments, case management, and supportive services to program participants in community-based settings in partnership with the peer support specialist assigned. Services focus on assisting program participants to develop the skills necessary to live successfully within the community, meet legal requirements, and maintaining connection with service providers.
- Participates in weekly supervision and clinical/service delivery staffing.
· Develops individual service plans and ensures complete and accurate documentation of service delivery in NAMI’s case management database.
- Help clients navigate the criminal legal system by accompanying them to court and meetings with attorneys.
· Attend regular meetings of LEAD’s Operations Work Group to advocate for clients with community partners including New Orleans Police Department, Orleans Public Defenders, City Attorneys, and other community partners.
- Works with the LEAD staff to conduct outreach and education to the New Orleans Police Department, service providers, and community-based professionals and programs regarding the LEAD initiative.
· Maintain required professional licensure/certification.
