Certified Athletic Trainer – Physician Extender
Job description
We are seeking a full-time Certified Athletic Trainer- Physician extender to work in our Sports Medicine division in The Department of Orthopaedics at The University of Maryland. Our Sports Medicine program offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art evaluation and non-surgical and surgical treatment of all sports injuries. Our sports surgeons provide care for the Terp athletes at the University of Maryland as well as the Retrievers of UMBC.
In this role, you will help care for orthopaedic patients in an outpatient setting while working with well-respected sports surgeons in a premier academic hospital center as well as working in collaboration with our residents.
The ideal candidate will have experience working as a physician extender in an orthopaedic setting, but all are open to apply.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Filters and serves as a point of contact for outpatient clinic schedules to accommodate emergent add-ons.
Obtains patient health history through observation, interview, and records review to include lab results, X-ray and MRI/CT scan results.
Performs initial physical examination to assess type and extent of injury.
Formulates a clinical assessment and communicates information about the injury with physician.
Records patient evaluations, re-evaluations and care provided in the electronic medical record, in accordance with departmental documentation standards.
Obtains needed equipment for exam room procedures.
Prepares therapeutic injections and assists with minor procedures as needed.
Reviews pre-operative instructions and explains the surgical process to patients who schedule surgery.
Assists physician with proxy orders for lab work, medications and imaging studies.
Performs patient education duties; hands out brochures, and directs patients to specific internet sites for more information regarding their injury. Helps to ensuring that the physician's instructions/protocols are understood and adhered to by the patient.
Acts as a physician-patient liaison in both surgical and nonsurgical conditions in conveying concerns and information.
Serves as a liaison to physical therapy and external athletic trainers addressing patient problems and physician protocols.
Performs clinical procedures such as the application of dressings and bandages, braces, splints, frames and crutch training as identified by the evaluation and treatment protocols of the supervising physician.
Administers therapeutic and conditioning exercises and modalities as identified by the evaluation and treatment protocols of the supervising physician.
Acts as a liaison with surgical schedulers and ensure appropriate information is shared for accurate surgery set-up and assists with posting surgery in database as needed.
Answers patient calls promptly; researches, investigates, and resolves patient problems to the satisfaction of the patient and the physician. Alerts the appropriate medical personnel regarding patient problems as needed.
Assists in completion of patient paperwork including FMLA, disability, and return to work forms as needed.
Works collaboratively with Orthopaedic leadership to ensure the Medical Center’s Mission, Values Statements are amplified each day in the outpatient care area.
Works with the Practice Manager to ensure safe and professional patient care.
Provides education sessions to registered medical assistants to continue to improve: patient experience, triage work flow, customer service, and other areas identified.

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Assesses gaps in policies and procedures, and create necessary policies and procedures to fulfill these gaps.
Attends Orthopaedic Grand rounds, Quality Review meetings and staff meetings.
Completes mandatory employee health, workers compensation, HR processes and other training and requirements in required time frame to ensure compliance with all FPI rules and regulations.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree in Athletic Training required
- Current Licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Maryland.
- Two years of experience in a physician office or hospital preferred
- Working knowledge of managed care basics, and experience working with a managed care and Medicare population
- Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
- Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
- Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
- Good communication skills
