C*ERTIFIED PEER SPECIALIST*
REPORTS TO: Program Manager
HOURS: Part-time/Contract
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) will provide outreach and engagement in community settings, and in-person peer support services that promote socialization, recovery, wellness, self-advocacy, development of natural supports, and maintenance of community living skills to a case load of up to 25 members placed in scattered site housing in the community. The CPS will be a member of a Housing First team formed to expand Step Up’s successful permanent housing model to the metropolitan Atlanta area. The team will assist adults experiencing chronically homelessness and co-occurring mental health, substance use and medical disabilities to achieve and maintain permanent supportive housing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Rehabilitative Skill Building, Recovery Supports and Independent Living
· As part of the interdisciplinary Housing Support team, the CPS assists homeless adults to identify and secure housing and achieve skill building goals to maintain housing during in-person sessions.
· Meets with assigned members individually through home visits and or telehealth sessions to provide peer support services and interventions, to review progress toward goals and ensure housing stability.
· Use personal experience to coach members on independent living skills, relapse prevention planning, and the acquisition of skills needed to manage symptoms of their mental illness
· Support members vocational choices and assist with overcoming job-related anxiety and choosing positions that match their strengths.
· Assist members in building social and interpersonal skills that will enhance employment opportunities and job retention.
· Models effective coping techniques, self-advocacy skills and self-help strategies and facilitate linkages to life skills groups and community-based recreational opportunities.
· Monitor members for warning signs of de-compensation and crisis, and coordinate with the treatment team to respond accordingly.
- Attend staff meetings, supervision and training as required.
Data Collection and Record Keeping
· Using the BIRP note format, document all services provided to members and collateral contacts on behalf of members as required by Step Up in Welligent and in the Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS).
· Responsible for tracking productivity, charting and documentation for all services, and file maintenance.
· Responsible for documenting all services provided and submitting paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Experience working as a Certified Peer Specialist with individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health and substance use challenges in a community setting. Knowledge of problem-solving strategies that support recovery and independent living and the ability to teach those skills to persons struggling with severe mental illness. An understanding and commitment to psychosocial rehabilitation philosophies and have the ability to work as part of a team. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, BIRP progress note format and basic computer skills a must. Position requires use of personal vehicle. Candidate must have well maintained transportation with insurance and a good driving record.
Required education:
- High School Diploma preferred
Required experience:
A Georgia-certified Peer Specialist with minimum of 2-year Peer Specialist experience working with homeless adults diagnosed with a mental illness and substance use in community settings.

- CPRP - Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner [preferred]
