About the Role:
Job Summary
The primary role of the Operating Room (OR) Charge Nurse is to ensure prompt, safe and effective care of surgical patients in collaboration with the surgical team - communicating effectively with staff, surgeons, anesthesia, ancillary departments, and the leadership team. Coordinating patient flow is critical to optimal patient outcomes, patient/family satisfaction, efficiency and fiscal accountability. The OR Charge Nurse triages patients by acuity level in collaboration with surgeon and anesthesia colleagues. Makes staffing decisions based on licensure, competency, availability and patient acuity. The OR Charge Nurse assists in the advancement of the professional practice environment by communicating the NGHS nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support the nursing strategic direction. Provides nursing involvement support for VOICE and the NDNQI quality teams including supporting team members in their professional participation. Assists with overall clinical governance and other projects as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Licensure or other certifications: Licensed to practice as an RN in Georgia. National certification in either a clinical or leadership specialty within two (2) years of hire.
  • Educational Requirements: Associates Degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum Experience:
  • Other: Member of professional organization within three months of hire into the position.

  • Preferred Licensure or other certifications:
  • Preferred Educational Requirements: A degree in Nursing (either BSN or MSN). BSN strongly encouraged within five (5) years.

  • Excellent Computer Skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruption or changes to schedule while maintaining composure and demonstrating professional demeanor
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with physicians, staff, anesthesiology and ancillary departments
  • Must have knowledge of all specialties in order to ensure safe staffing, accurate booking and equipment needs
  • Demonstrates exceptional time management skills

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Communicates schedule changes to stakeholders in a timely manner to facilitate safe and efficient care.
  • Performs safe and thorough hand off to oncoming charge nurse and others as indicated.
  • Addresses physician and staff concerns promptly notifying the Nurse Manager/Director/Executive Director based on nature of concern.
  • Ensure all staff competency levels match the duties being performed.
  • Ensure all employees are provided lunch breaks.
  • Verify daily call coverage and assign when necessary to meet safe patient care standards.
  • Monitors and promotes favorable productivity by making sound staffing decisions (increasing when needed/flexing off when case volumes are down).
  • Ensure cases are booked appropriately.
  • Actively collaborates with charge anesthesiologist to promote patient centered care.
  • Responsible for ensuring preference cards are pulled for all add on cases.
  • Role models professionalism in all situations.
  • Maintain the daily flow of cases by ensuring on time starts, turnover times, and adequate staffing.
  • Notify Surgeon of any changes and/or delay in their schedule in a timely manner.
  • Circulate cases when needed.
  • Schedules add on cases, monitors accuracy and communicates changes to affected departments (i.e. SPD, pre op, PACU, etc.)
