An Overview
This sworn executive-level position assists and supports the Chief of Police in the overall management and administration of the Alexandria Police Department, comprised of over 300 law enforcement officers and 80 professional staff. This position performs highly responsible leadership and management functions in the development, administration, coordination, and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and administrative and operational activities in the Administrative and Technology Bureau. The Assistant Chief is responsible for the daily operational and administrative functions of the Support Services, Technology, Human Resources and Labor Relations, Training, and Emergency Readiness Divisions. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of the Chief and in accordance with departmental and city regulations and procedures. The Assistant Chief may be called upon to act in the absence of the Chief.
The Assistant Chief directs the activities of the Administrative and Technology Bureau which includes facilities and security management, property and evidence, accreditation, fleet management, systems operations, tactical computers, body-worn cameras, human resources, recruiting, training and development, and tactical training and response sections. The Assistant Chief Engages in executive-level problem solving, provides strategic guidance, formulates, and recommends innovative solutions, and manages change efforts within the assigned bureau.
The Opportunity – Examples of Work
Manages projects to include oversight of internal and external Citywide activities dealing with a myriad of public service issues.- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with internal departments throughout the city, collaborating to achieve individual and joint goals to ensure that the outcomes meet the needs of all stakeholders.
- Serves as an executive representative of the department at meetings, conferences, and other executive-level functions, including serving on external boards and advisory groups.
- Directs agency emergency preparedness and effective response planning to ensure appropriate and defensible incident response and resolution by the agency.
- Directs and supports the strategic recruitment, hiring, and retention of a diverse workforce while promoting a healthy professional environment built on building and implementing sound policies for equitable treatment of all employees.
- Oversees the implementation of innovative automated systems that meet or exceed department business needs.
- Provides recommendations to the Chief on a variety of police issues and concerns to develop new and innovative solutions, programs, policies, directives, and procedures.
- Prepares and oversees the preparation of reports of a broad administrative and/or technical nature.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

A Bachelor's degree and 12 years of relevant, professional experience to include two (2) years as a Captain or higher in law enforcement. Must obtain an executive level certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services within one year of appointment.
To be considered an ideal candidate, one should also possess a master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field; as well as knowledge and experience in 21st century policing.
