Responsibilities
The Coding Supervisor accurately codes all diagnoses and procedures in the medical record. The Coding Supervisor abstracts relevant information from these medical records. This information forms the basis of a patient information system relating to the clinical care of the patient.Essential Functions:
- Coordinates the work assignments of coding technicians to ensure completion, accuracy and integrity of medical records.
- Possesses a high-level understanding of the DRG validation procedure, DRG information and CPT guidelines for outpatient and various regulatory guidelines.
- Fosters an environment of teamwork and service excellence within the department by effectively communicating goals, standards and needs of the department and organization.
- Works closely with physicians and appropriate clinical areas to obtain clarifications on diagnoses/procedures and clinical guidelines for coding compliance.
- Provides consultation to other departments regarding coding and documentation requirements.
- Ensures all functional areas of responsibility meet established deadlines and turnaround times.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, orienting, training, evaluating and disciplining assigned staff.
- Prepares work schedules, maintaining appropriate coverage. Monitors overtime.
- Performs concurrent and retrospective review of patient charts to ensure optimal and timely coding assignment and appropriate reimbursement. Corrects codes as necessary.
- Develops, implements and maintains a data quality assurance program for coding and reimbursement.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:- Associate's degree from a health record technology program, equivalent approved courses of AHIMA, or comparable work experience.
- Minimum of three years of experience in coding, abstracting and gathering statistical data in a healthcare setting.
- Over 1 to 3 years required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- CCS upon hire required.
- RHIA/RHIT upon hire preferred.
