Description of Job

Are you interested in growing your communication career while giving back to Coloradans? The Governor’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) is looking for a talented communication aficionado to support the State of Colorado’s highly impactful tech initiatives. Work alongside some of Colorado’s brightest tech experts as we help transform digital government for our residents.


About the Role

As our new Communications Specialist, you will be responsible for executing marketing communication strategies and plans to provide clear, concise, and timely messaging to internal and external stakeholders in support of the state’s technology programs and projects. You will develop, write and edit a variety of compelling marketing and communication material including web content, email newsletters, presentations, social media posts, marketing collateral, video scripts, and training guides to align with the business goals of OIT. In this role, you will partner with Communications team members, project managers, and technical subject experts to make sure that the value story of OIT’s work is shared.

Reporting to the Agency Communications Supervisor, the ideal candidate for this role is creative, well-organized, an exceptional copywriter, a team player, able to work independently to meet deadlines, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. This position is accountable for establishing and maintaining a positive image of OIT through targeted, on-brand communication and strong internal and customer relationships.

About the Team

The Communications Office is a group of energetic and collaborative team members who provide a full range of internal and external marketing communications (marcom) to support OIT’s people, programs, projects, and services. This dynamic team executes strategic marcom initiatives to educate and engage a diverse stakeholder group including employees, state agency customers, legislators, local and national press, and the residents of Colorado. The Communications team consists of staff uniquely experienced in customer and employee communications, creative services, media relations, branding, and marketing. We work hard and have fun along the way!


Primary Job Duties

  • Produce and edit a variety of content supporting OIT’s technology initiatives, products, and services for websites, newsletters, fact sheets, user guides, etc.

  • Develop, design, and manage content on multiple internal and external websites, primarily using the Google Sites platform.
  • Develop, design, and manage compelling messaging and visual content on OIT’s email marketing tool.
  • Track and report on communication KPIs toward the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Build strong relationships across multiple departments and ensure key stakeholders are consulted with and/or informed of communication plans, timelines, and decisions.
  • Stay abreast of new communication solutions and industry best practices to drive competitive advantage.
  • Support Communications leadership team members in the areas of marketing, digital (web and email) communication, employee communication, and more.
  • Translate technical language into layman’s terms by employing plain language standards and using design programs (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite or Canva) to make content engaging and readable for end users.
  • Develop messaging for customer-impacting technology incidents and outages.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment which may include Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or similar.
  • Three years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A sample of website content creation as well as a general writing sample must be attached to the application at the time of submission.

Substitutions:

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.
  • Additional, appropriate paid or unpaid experience will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Training or Certification related to the work assigned to the position will be assigned credit towards substitution for experience and/or education but cannot completely substitute for these qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five or more years of experience in strategic communications within a large, complex organization.
  • Strong experience communicating technology-focused information with the ability to simplify complex messages for different audiences and create content that reaches audiences across various channels.
  • Excellent project management skills with a proven track record of managing multiple work streams with numerous stakeholders while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Passion for learning and staying up to date on innovative communication strategies.
  • Exceptional communication skills with sound knowledge of AP writing style; thorough knowledge of writing, editing, and grammar.
  • Passion for collaboration and knowledge sharing; strong project management skills with a proven track record of managing multiple work streams with numerous stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of AP writing style; thorough knowledge of writing, editing, and graphics.

Conditions of Employment:


OIT employees must comply with any screening procedures in place at state entity locations where they might be required to perform work.

A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.

Positions supporting some agencies such as the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public Safety will also require a pre-employment drug test.

This position may require travel within the specified geographic area, and to locations across the state as needed.

This position is intended to work primarily remotely with periodic and required reporting to our Denver Office. All remote work must be performed in Colorado.

Supplemental Information

If this posting indicates “remote from anywhere in CO” in the title, periodic reporting to the primary state work location designated for the position is required. All remote work must be performed in Colorado.

While candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position. A reasonable timeframe for relocation will be established on an individual basis, while considering business needs, and determining a start date.
