University of California Health comprises six academic health centers, 20 health professional schools, a Global Health Institute and systemwide services that improve the health of patients and the University's students, faculty and employees. POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting two major work streams of the University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI): 1) communications and 2) program operations and development. The individual serves as the hub of communications activities and implements UCGHI's communications strategy. The position plays a central role in building and amplifying UCGHI's brand and maximizing UCGHI's visibility to audiences internal and external to the University of California. Additionally, they perform essential functions to maintain efficiencies of this fast-paced program. They may be responsible for coordinating the development, launch and operations of new initiatives such as the UCGHI Student Ambassadors program, under the direction of the leadership team. They also track and analyze data to assess UCGHI's impact and success and support the development of progress reports, evaluations and proposals. The Communications Specialist sits at the administrative center of Institute and reports directly to the UCGHI Deputy Director. They also work with the UCGHI Communications Director to meet communications objectives.
The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, take initiative, work well autonomously, and have experience working in a dynamic administrative or office environment. They should be adept at balancing quickly shifting priorities and working with cross-functional committees with tandem work streams and objectives. The individual will work with several UC collaborators across the University of California system as well as individuals external to UC. They should also have experience researching, developing, launching, coordinating and evaluating new initiatives, as well as intermediate or higher skills in the coordination and implementation of communications strategies. This position requires a candidate who has strong attention to detail, reliable, adaptable to changing priorities and is flexible and able to grow with the organization. It is a career position.

Works with UCGHI Deputy Director, UCGHI Communications Director, UCGHI Leadership Team and UCGHI partners (faculty, staff, students at other UC campuses) to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communications plans and / or projects. Curates, updates, and maintains content on the UCGHI website. Coordinates website support with production of monthly UCGHI newsletter and implementation of UCGHI social media strategy. Serve on working groups and planning committees for new/existing initiatives (UC Global Health Day planning committee, etc.).

Manages comprehensive communications programs, including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Communications planning, implementation, and coordination across multiple platforms and vehicles. Writes some original content for various communications vehicles including website, newsletter, development pieces, fact sheets, brochures, white-papers. Position will research and draft complex reports, briefings, and executive summaries. Draft and maintain metrics for website, newsletter.

Advises and consults with departmental / college administration regarding all aspects of communications including developing strong communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution. Coordinates efforts with a variety of external and internal contacts to ensure smooth operations and troubleshoot issues.

Ensures production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints, including events such as webinars and signature event UC Global Health Day. Preserves and enforces UCGHI's brand and identity guidelines.

Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements. Manages active network on behalf of UCGHI to maintain information sharing with constituents at sister UC campuses, programs and partners including external constituents. Coordination of internal and external UCGHI Communications across UC. Coordinates effective processes to collaborate and communicate with internal UCGHI and external audiences and partners.

Program monitoring and evaluation: Works with leadership to develop and maintain systems/metrics to regularly monitor communications progress and impact of communications activities. Analyzes data to determine the need for program enhancements, finer distinctions and / or additional process / policy components. Drafts quantitative reports and/or narrative summaries to support evaluation and assessment of program. Develops proposals and recommendations with the Deputy Director to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the organization or initiative.

Coordinate UC-wide UCGHI Student Ambassadors program including promotion (social media, listserv, etc.), create application, manage application and selection process, program planning for monthly webinars, evaluate program and enhance overall program components to strengthen program, etc. Work in collaboration with student leaders and student-led committees.
