The Aurora Police Department is looking for an efficient, customer service driven individual to disseminate impounded vehicle information to Police Personnel and the public. The following job description identifies specific duties, responsibilities, and tasks for this position and the knowledge, abilities and skills needed to perform them. However, the ultimate goal for this position should be to promote a safe environment through police and citizen interaction at the Vehicle Impound Lot.
The approved budgeted hiring range for this position is $17.03 - $21.29/hour and will be based on selected candidates' education, experience and training above minimum qualifications.
This is classified as VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefit Employee), where the selected candidate will work less than 29 hours per week. This position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

- Monitors the impoundment, release and disposal of vehicles in compliance with City, local, and State Laws and regulations
- Provides quality customer service and administrative support duties such as answer phone calls from the public and personnel within the city
- Positively Identify vehicle ownership and release impounded vehicles back to owner, lien holder or qualified party
- Regularly Performs physical inspections of impounded vehicles, Vehicle Identification Numbers, and License plates, to track the accuracy, placement, security and release of impounded vehicles for the police department
- Utilization of Aurora Police Department Report Management Systems and CCIC/NCIC Data base.
- Submits a record search through internet communication to Department of Motor Vehicle Title search to identify ownership and Lienholders for accurate and timely notice via first class mail
- Prepare vehicles and process documents for vehicles sold at Police Auction
- Performs other related duties as assigned
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
- At least 2 years general clerical experience including extensive data entry and customer service experience
- Experience in vehicle identification or similar work experience
- Basic experience in the use of personal computers
- At least 2 years’ experience working in a judicial or law enforcement environment.
- Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures
- Basic computer systems to include word processing and spreadsheet applications, and report writing
- Some knowledge of vehicle appraisal methods and Colorado automobile titling procedures
- Vehicle Identification number formats and locations within a vehicle
- Current municipal, state and federal laws pertaining to vehicle titles, registration, purchasing and the sale or disposal of motor vehicles
- Skill in the use of windows-based programs
- Strong interpersonal and team oriented
- Strong customer service skills
- Skill in multi-tasking, prioritizing time sensitive activities, and being well organized
- Vehicle operation (manual and standard transmission)
- Skill in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, all levels of management including executive staff, citizens, and elected officials
- Operate a computer terminal to perform data entry of records
- Handle vehicles on police investigative hold and understand rules of evidence
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Work in inclement weather
- Lift at least 50 pounds
- Properly and safely utilize power tools
- Successfully complete a training program for CCIC/NCIC certification within 6 months
- Valid driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle report
- NCIC/CCIC certification within the first 6 months
- May progress from Impound Technician to Impound Technician II between 12-18 months based on performance
Essential Personnel:
- When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
- Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time
- May be required to stand 30 minutes to 2.5 hours per shift
- May require occasional pushing, pulling, bending and stooping
- Seldom lifting, carrying, walking and standing for extended periods
- Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate keyboard; vision to read and interpret reports, documents and other written information
- Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens
- Continuous endurance sufficient to sit and work at a computer for long periods of time
- Work both indoors in a shared office environment, and outdoors in varying weather conditions, noise and dust may be present regularly. Shift work to include rotating shifts, working weekends, and possibly holidays
- Frequent use of standard office equipment including telephone, printer, scanner, computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel
- Occasional use of John Deere Gator utility vehicle, small power tools, lock out tools, slim-jims, and other equipment as necessary
- This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
