Job description
The Teaching & Learning (T&L) team at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School seeks a Copy Editor to ensure the quality, accuracy, clarity, and consistency of online course materials and other related content. T&L partners with Carey faculty to create and maintain more than 80 online courses. The Copy Editor will work closely with a team of instructional designers, multimedia specialists, instructional teaching specialists, and other staff who support online course development and revision. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent attention to detail as well as an ability to keep the big picture in mind.NOTE: Please include a writing sample (two pages max) with your resume and cover letter. Candidates who are selected for an interview will be required to complete a copyediting test.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
A. Editing course materials (70%)
Copyedit and proofread course materials-e.g., syllabi, assignments, exercises, learning management system content-according to APA and Carey-specific style guides. This includes but is not limited to reviewing content for grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, and inclusive language, as well as consistency in capitalization, font usage, and numerals.
Proofread textual content of images, videos, and interactives.
Edit LMS-based content using WYSIWYG and basic HTML editors.
Check consistency and clarity of assignment instructions.
Raise queries where additional feedback or clarification is necessary.
Work independently as well as with those involved in course development and revisions to meet deadlines.
Communicate proactively when deadlines are at risk of not being met.
Assist in building effective review processes and workflows.
B. Non-academic projects (20%)
Write or edit non-academic materials generated by T&L, such as job aids, PowerPoint presentations, web content, and communications.
C. Style guide (5%)
Maintain T&L style guide by identifying and soliciting needed updates or additions.
Field questions about how to interpret or apply the style guide.
D. Other duties as assigned (5%)
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Experience in successfully managing multiple projects and assignments to meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with staff and faculty at all levels.
Experience building consensus amid varying viewpoints.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in English, journalism, technical writing, or related field.
In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
Superior writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Experience with APA style or other style manuals.
Experience using Adobe Acrobat markup tools.
Familiarity with web accessibility guidelines (e.g., WCAG).
Experience working in a learning management system (LMS).

Role/Level/Range: ATO 37.5/02/OF
Starting Salary Range: $20.40 - $28.00/hr (Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: 8:30-5:00 Monday - Friday, occassional weekends and evenings may be required.
