This is responsible work involving the performance of general law enforcement duties and conducting responsible criminal investigations, and/or supervising and training new officers in the field.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, preferably supplemented by college level course work in law enforcement, and a minimum of two years' experience at the level of Police Officer; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Good knowledge of applicable laws and ordinances; good knowledge of the rules and regulations of the police department; good knowledge of modern police methods and procedures; good knowledge of the geography of the City and the locations of important buildings; good knowledge of first aid principles and practices and skill in their application; good knowledge and ability in the use of firearms; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear and comprehensive written reports; ability to organize and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Performs routine and general police duties as assigned; assists the supervising sergeant in the performance of his assignments and appears in court to give evidence and testimony; oversees the activities of a shift of personnel as assigned; interviews victims and witnesses and takes statements from same; interrogates suspects; investigates crime and criminal acts at the crime scene to include identifying and preserving evidence, making diagrams of crime scenes, lifting latent prints, and recording all necessary data for later use; administers first aid as preliminary treatment for injury or illness; conducts and oversees the detection, apprehension and prosecution of violators engaged in criminal activity to include illicit narcotic traffic; initiates, plans, and coordinates underage drinking compliance activities as assigned; administers the enforcement of the Alabama Community Notification Act as assigned; participates in crime prevention and community awareness activities as assigned; conducts investigations related to Homeland Security as assigned; serves as field training officer for rookie police officers; insures that warrants are obtained and signed as required; responds to emergency complaints where life and property may be threatened; enforces local, state and federal laws; prepares cases for presentation to District Attorney's Office; testifies in court relative to criminal proceedings; prepares and makes written and oral reports; provides administrative support for department operations; responds to after-hours emergencies; performs related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for investigating crime and criminal activity and conducting responsible law enforcement work such as patrolling to prevent and detect criminal activity. Work is performed under the supervision of a Police Sergeant or other superior officer and the incumbent may assume the duties of a Police Sergeant in his or her absence. A Police Corporal may be assigned to assist in training rookie police officers.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
