This is a unique opportunity to work in the Legal Department of the renewable energy business of a publicly-traded diversified energy company. AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR) operates regulated electric and natural gas utilities and renewable energy generation in 24 states through two lines of business, with combined assets of more than $40 billion. Avangrid Renewables owns and operates 8.8 gigawatts of electricity capacity, primarily through wind and solar power, with a presence in 22 states across the United States and corporate offices in Portland, Oregon, Orange, Connecticut and Boston, Massachusetts. AVANGRID supports the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals, received a Climate Development Project climate score of “A-,” the top score received in the utilities sector, and has been recognized for two consecutive years by Ethical Boardroom as the North American utility with the “best corporate governance practices.” The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team providing legal counsel and support to Avangrid Renewables utilizing global best practices. This position will provide legal support for a variety of development, construction, PPA origination, operations and asset management activities for renewable energy projects. The mix of responsibilities will be determined based on the candidates’ prior experience and skill sets. This position reports to the General Counsel for Avangrid Renewables, who is based in Orange, Connecticut. There are no direct reports to this position.
Responsibilities
- Provides legal counsel and advice supporting development, construction, procurement, origination, and asset management activities relating to renewable energy projects.
- As needed, reviews and drafts contracts and other legal documents to which Avangrid Renewables and its affiliates are a party, including NDAs, Power Purchase Agreements, Interconnection Agreements, corporate guaranties, and routine construction and procurement contracts.
- Performs other projects as assigned.
- Preferred candidates will experience or familiarity in one or more of the following areas:
- Renewable energy project development, financing, construction, and operations.
- Siting and permit issues relating to large infrastructure projects.
- Power Purchase Agreements, Interconnection Agreements and other agreements relating to renewable energy projects.
- Federal and state permitting, environmental and regulatory matters impacting renewable energy development, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and other wildlife management and protection statutes.
- Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rules and process, specifically as they relate to renewable energy projects and compliance.

- Able to analyze complex legal issues and advise on appropriate corporate response
- Strong experience with common business software tools, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel)
Experience/Training:
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience counseling renewable energy companies (or comparable experience in the sector) at a law firm or as in-house counsel.
Location:
- Portland, Oregon or Orange, Connecticut
Required Education:
- J.D.
- State bar admission in Oregon/Connecticut or ability to waive into local Bar.
