PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
Provide non-acute counseling services to current student body, making referrals to outside agencies as needed. Leader in training for faculty and staff regarding student mental health issues and guidance in handling situations. Some evening hours may be required. Position works 44 weeks per year as scheduled by the Vice President of Student Affairs per the Faculty CBA.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides non-acute personal counseling services to students, making referrals to outside agencies as needed.
- Provide short term solution-based counseling to students with personal concerns.
- Provide referrals to outside agencies and community resources as needed.
- Provide counseling support services to students on appointment and walk-in-basis. Modalities include phone, email, virtual and in-person.
- Provide non-acute counseling support services to students on financial aid probation, and other students who are in programs which require special academic monitoring.
- Record all pertinent student information electronically. Maintain confidentiality as required by both FERPA and HIPPA regulations, including confidential counseling records. Make staff aware of regulations required for counseling.
- Assist students with career exploration, including interest testing and interpretation (e.g. Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs)
- Act as consultant to departments in providing services to students and prospective students.
- Maintain regular contact with currently enrolled students being counseled.
- Work closely with other team members in the delivery of high-quality services with focus on student success.
- Provide at least two educational programs or activities each semester for students on the main campus
- Provide training each semester for North Central Michigan College faculty and staff.
- Facilitate institutional improvement through participation on college committees.
- Manage Campus Assessment, Response & Evaluation Team (C.A.R.E.).
- Participate in college recruitment programs as needed.
- Adhere to ACA Professional Code of Ethics and all relevant State and Federal laws pertaining to the provision of mental health services.
- Provide academic advising for students as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned by Vice President of Student Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling, current License: State of Michigan (LPC) required, and three (3) years experience higher education (community college preferred) or three (3) years counseling experience.
- Maintain LPC license for duration of employment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of student development issues.
- Commitment to the community college mission and specifically North Central's mission: "We provide educational, economic and cultural opportunities for student learning, personal growth and community improvement".
- Strong customer relations skills and commitment to teamwork.
- Computer skills necessary; MS Office suite, and experience with a Student Information System preferred.
