Trauma Advocacy Counselor
REPORTS TO: Director of Human Trafficking
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers domestic and sexual violence survivors through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.
Position Overview:
Trauma Advocacy Counselors deliver trauma-informed counseling to primary and secondary survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking. Populations can include children, adolescents or adults. Services are generally targeted towards specific goals for healing that client has. Staff would primarily be stationed either at our central office in Mount Clemens or our Saint Clair Shores office, sessions are offered to survivors virtually as well. Additionally, Trauma Advocacy Counselors are responsible for thorough and accurate data collection to contribute to quarterly and annual evaluation and funder reports.
Trauma Advocacy Counselors must have knowledge of survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and advocacy-based counseling interventions with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking that are rooted in anti-oppression values and the empowerment model. Specific knowledge in crisis intervention, trauma-informed counseling, lethality assessments and safety planning are desired. Additionally, Trauma Advocacy Counselors must have experience doing group counseling. As we serve survivors of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and backgrounds, candidates must demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
· Implement agency and program mission, vision and anti-oppression and empowerment philosophies.
· Administer and implement agency policies and procedures.
· Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics.
· Deliver trauma-informed individual and group counseling to primary and secondary survivors.
· Connect survivors with resources that will support the survivor’s well-being.
· Assist survivors in assessing lethality and planning for safety.
· Actively participate in peer reviews.
· Attend all departmental and agency staff meetings, and other meetings required by Turning Point.
· Conduct relationships with colleagues to promote mutual respect, improvement of services, and problem solving.
· Notify the Director of Trauma Advocacy Services, Senior Program Director, or Chief Executive Officer of any emergency situations that may affect Turning Point staff and/or clients.
· Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Trauma Advocacy Services.
Qualifications:
· Must possess a Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field.
· Must possess a limited or full license.
· Must have knowledge of victim-centered, trauma-informed, and advocacy-based counseling interventions with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking that are rooted in anti-oppression values and the empowerment model.
· Specific knowledge in crisis intervention, trauma-informed counseling, lethality assessments, victim’s rights, and safety planning are desired.
· Experience facilitating group counseling
· Must have the ability to work with diverse populations.
· Limited travel may be required outside of main work office for meetings.
· Must have reliable transportation, insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License, and a good driving record.
· Must pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.

- Must be able to drive to multiple sites.
- Ability to lift 50lbs.
- Ability to operate general office equipment.
Salary:
The Trauma Advocacy Counselor position begins at an annual salary of $46,000 and is commensurate with qualifications. Salary includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, and paid time off. Retirement plan options are also available.
