Texas NeuroRehab Center is currently accepting applicants for a Counselor. This candidate will provide therapeutic counseling services to the patients and families of patients who are participants of the Medical programs at TNC.

Texas NeuroRehab Center is a specialized treatment facility located ten minutes from downtown Austin on 67 wooded acres. We have served the Austin community for over 60-years and are proud of our history and tenured leadership team.

Today, Texas NeuroRehab Center provides complex medical and brain injury rehab for ages 13 years and older and neurobehavioral residential treatment services for children and adolescents. The capabilities of the facility as a whole allow for integrated and specialized care for children, adolescents and adults facing difficult challenges.

Qualifications

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Counselors in this position will work with patients with a wide range of complex medical issues including but not limited to: stroke, traumatic brain injury, paralysis and co-occurring mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, substance use and more. In this role, common counseling themes and skills needed include: grief and loss, adjustment post traumatic accident, loss of independence, motivational interviewing, ways to enhance healthy coping skills, and eliciting family involvement in care and providing family support. Professional verbal and written skills needed for communicating the patient status to families, case workers, and assorted medical team including doctors and other therapists involved in each patient's care. Able to maintain professional records and notes, patient confidentiality and ability to maintain professional relationships with staff/patients. Knowledge of appropriate mental health assessments, diagnoses, and interventions with patients. Able to develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Above all, demonstrate a willingness to expand knowledge and continue to develop awareness and understanding on medical conditions involving brain and spinal cord injury.

EDUCATION: Master's Degree

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:LMSW, LCSW, LPC, LPC-A

EXPERIENCE: 2 years’ experience. Knowledge consistent with the disabilities and ages of predominantly adult through geriatric patients in TNC Bluebonnet and PABI programs preferred.

PHYSICAL/GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to sit or stand while interacting with patients, families, and staff. Able to write/type for extended periods of time. Able to travel between various hospital areas. Able to use telephone for extended periods of time. Able to deal with stressful situations and changing priorities. Able to sustain physical activity eight hours a day. Able to remain on feet eight hours per day. Able to lift, carry, and lower 25 pounds without assistance. Able to push patients in wheel chairs up and down hills and pursue running patients. Able to transfer patients to and from wheel chairs. Able to confront a dangerous and aggressive patient. Able to verbally communicate to de-escalate a crisis situation with patients and accurately convey patient behavior and status. Able to visually observe to convey verbally or in writing patient behavior or to protect self and others from aggressive patients or other accidents. Able to write legibly and grammatically to convey patient behavior and information in the patient chart. Able to eat with and feed patients. Regular and expected attendance. Hearing and vision sufficient to perform essential job functions. Emotional stability and ability to deal with changing priorities. Able to physically restrain patients by individual or team restraint per hospital policy.
