This position focuses on restoration activities in the Salmon Creek and Lewis River watersheds, spending approximately 65-75% of the time on activities related to planting and maintaining trees and providing logistical support for volunteers and contract crews for ongoing restoration projects. This includes leading volunteers and facilitating educational activities. The monitoring portion comprises 25-35% of the members time. The monitoring program helps us to better understand the efficacy of restoration projects as well as to engage volunteers in the study of environmental health. Duties include: monitoring survivability, invasive species, wildlife and water quality at restoration sites. The specialist assists with data collection and analysis, and helps to ensure the quality of the data. The specialist will also train volunteers in data collection on a seasonal basis. This position is a great opportunity for someone interested in the techniques and efficacy of riparian restoration.

Clark Public Utilities (CPU) was the first public agency in Washington State to voluntarily develop a watershed enhancement program, and currently is the largest restoration effort in the region. As a public agency responsible for providing drinking water to the public, our mission is to protect water quality and ensure adequate supplies for both people and fish. CPU developed its “Bringing Salmon Back to Salmon Creek” initiative in 1992 with the creation of the StreamTeam, as an effort to educate and engage the community on watershed health and restoration initiatives. StreamTeam is recognized both locally and statewide for its efforts to restore salmon habitat and enhance water quality in the Salmon Creek and the East Fork Lewis River watersheds, while increasing community awareness. CPU developed the Eradication Nation invasive plant control program in 2011 as a specialized program within StreamTeam, with the goal of bolstering community participation on invasive weed control initiatives in the Salmon Creek and the East Fork Lewis River watersheds. Since its inception StreamTeam planted over 900,000 trees, stabilized over 2 miles of eroding stream banks and managed over 400 acres of invasive plants. AmeriCorps has been integral to the achievement of these milestones since 1997.
