SALARY: $89,926.20 - $140,653.80 annually ($43.23 - $67.62 hourly; wage will be dependent upon education and experience)


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the Chief of Police, the Deputy Police Chief is an executive-level sworn officer, responsible for performing professional, administrative, and managerial duties related to organizing, coordinating, and implementing directives and policies as needed, to control the day-to-day operations of the department, including administration, patrol investigations, and special services. The Deputy Police Chief will also oversee the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws as needed to preserve the peace and protect citizen rights and property.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (These examples are not all-inclusive)

  • Oversees the enforcement of all laws within the city's legal jurisdiction while ensuring police services to all city residents.
  • Performs professional managerial duties including directing and coordinating the administration of the police department.
  • Assumes departmental responsibility in the absence of the Chief of Police.
  • Assist the Chief of Police in personnel matters such as recruitment, selection, promotion, transfers, and disciplinary actions.
  • Conducts performance evaluations on positions reporting directly to the Deputy Police Chief and oversees the quality of overall department performance management functions.
  • Coordinate the information gathered and work accomplished by various officers.
  • Respond to major incidents, provides management oversight of major criminal investigations, assure timely delivery of case documents to city/county attorney or courts, conduct research, apprehend and arrest suspects.
  • Develop and manage the Police department budget; approve and monitor expenditures.
  • Performs routine review and approval of payroll, overtime, material requisitions, etc., and stays within budget.
  • Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Represent the Police Department to outside agencies, within the City's other departments, and to elected officials as necessary.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and other professional meetings to keep current with trends and new methods in the field of law enforcement.
  • Resolve complaints and inquiries of a sensitive nature and respond accordingly.
  • Supervise the functions and activities of civilian staff.
  • Maintain public relations with schools, citizens, media, and the public at large.
  • Develops short- and long-term goals that align with the city's vision and strategic plan.
  • High-level understanding and demonstrated ability for implementation of public safety policy and procedure in line with national best practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding and implementation of data-driven, intelligence-based, community-oriented policing methods in previous leadership roles.
  • Any other responsibilities or duties required to maintain effective operations of the department or as assigned by the Chief of Police.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, police science, or related field required, master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience as a law enforcement officer is required.
  • 4+ years of experience as a law enforcement supervisor is required, Lieutenant rank or higher preferred.
  • Must be a Utah P.O.S.T. certified Law Enforcement Officer or become certified upon hire date.
  • Must possess a valid Utah Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Must pass a comprehensive and thorough background check.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Must have excellent management/supervisory skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work based on department and production objectives.
  • Ability to manage projects simultaneously.
  • Must be highly self-motivated and customer-centric.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays when needed; the schedule may vary on a weekly basis.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work with a variety of different people at various levels.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be strong with multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
  • Required to have excellent analytical, decision-making, and team interaction/effectiveness skills.
  • Required to have a strong skill level in firearms.
  • Required to have intermediate skill level with PowerPoint, PC or laptop, email, and internet.
  • Advanced skill level with MS Word is required.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test, and a background screen, provide a copy of their current driving record, and provide employment verification with form I-9.

** The Deputy Police Chief is an at-will position, appointed by the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police or City Manager may terminate employment at any time, with or without cause or explanation.**
