The Design Manager will supervise the mechanical design team which includes engineers and mechanical designers. Manage day to day activities of design, maintain the department code of conduct, hours, design and detailing standards, staff expectations, quality control, inter-department communications, intra-company communication and the department’s scope of work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
· Manage the design team responsible for the engineering design work required per equipment order. Outputs include engineering models, drawings, and bill of materials.
· Perform the same engineering design work as the design team as required.
· Act as engineering lead on projects or parts orders not handled by Project Managers or the other Design Manager(s).
· Work with Director of Engineering to schedule tasks completed by the design team.
· Perform special assignments as requested.
· Train new mechanical designers/engineers on machinery design and/or PVS Sackett-Waconia equipment.
· Develop and maintain standards for modeling, design and detailing alongside the other Design Manager(s).
· Coordinate work with other departments within the organization.
· Complete performance evaluations; make hiring recommendations; recommend
disciplinary actions; approve requests for PTO; prepare work schedules and
assignments; supervise the activities of assigned personnel; monitor reports and record keeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy and procedure guidelines; instruct personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and provide training.
· Maintain files and records.
· Become trained in using enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and assist with the development and implementation of ERP.
· Be an instrumental representative of your staff. Voice employee concerns and inquiries.
· Provide innovation to company improvement processes and the implementation of these processes.
· Safeguard confidential information regarding employees and the company.
· Collaborate frequently with the Director of Engineering.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of engineering and design principles.
- Possession of effective problem solving and analytical skills.
- Availability to work the hours needed to complete required work.
- Understanding of industry safety regulations including NFPA, OSHA, and IBC codes.
- Good communication, both written and oral.
- Ability to manage employees.
- Ability to deliver results on time to the highest standards.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects at the same time.
- Strong organization and documentation skills.

- Possess knowledge of Microsoft Outlook tools (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Ability to create, proofread and edit documents.
- Working knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, including use of computers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two year drafting and design technical certificate, degree or equivalent.
- Ten years design experience.
- Management/supervisory experience.
- Experience in AutoCAD and SolidWorks or comparable software.
- A strong work ethic.
- Possesses qualities such as productivity, dependability, resourcefulness, efficiency, and professionalism.
- Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
- Able to work flexible hours, travel up to 10% of the time, and maintain a mobile office.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S. in engineering with ten years of design experience.
- Fluent user of AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
- Fluent user of SolidWorks PDM.
- Experience in any of the following areas: agriculture, material handling, material blending or the fertilizer industry.
Relocation: Not available.
JOB LOCATION:
Works primarily from an office in the Baltimore, MD facility. Travel to other company operations and job sites as needed.
