Position Summary

The direct care staff position is entry-level professional position that implementing and monitoring persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team; reports on client progress; and makes recommendations concerning changes in the person-centered plan.
  • Observes client's behavior and participation in treatment program activities.
  • Support needs of individuals living in their own home or their family’s home.
  • Provide instruction and assistance to enable the individual to acquire and maintain skills that will allow him/her to function with greater independence in the community.
  • Provides habilitation, training and instruction coupled with elements of support, supervision, and engaging participation to reflect the natural flow of training, practice of skills, and other activities as they occur during the person’s day.
  • Interactions with the person are designed to achieve outcomes identified in the Plan of Care. Support and supervision of the person’s activities to sustain skills gained through habilitation and training is also an acceptable goal of home and community
  • Training and/or support with socialization that includes development or maintenance of self-awareness and self-control, social responsiveness, social amenities, and interpersonal skills, and the development and maintenance of personal relationships.
  • Training and/or support with personal skill development that includes activities designated to improve the participants’ own ability to accomplish everyday activities of community living, including eating, bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and mobility.
  • Training and support with community participation, recreation, or leisure that includes the development or maintenance of skills to use community resources, facilities or businesses and support in accessing such opportunities for community integration.
  • Home supports. This service may be provided in an individual’s private residence

and/or in the community.

  • Personal Care services include support, supervision and engaging participation with eating, bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and other activities of daily living.
  • Support and engaging consumer participation is non-habilitative and describes the flexibility of activities that may encourage the person to maintain skills gained during active treatment and/or habilitation while also providing supervision for independent activities of the consumer.
  • This service may include assistance with preparation of meals but does not include the cost of the meals themselves.
  • When specified in the Plan of Care, this service may also include such housekeeping chores as bed making, dusting, and vacuuming, which are incidental to the care furnished, or which are essential to the health and welfare of the individual, rather than the individual’s family.
  • Personal Care also includes assistance with monitoring health status and physical condition, assistance with transferring, ambulation, and use of special mobility devices.
  • Personal care providers may be members of the individual’s family; however, payment will not be made for services furnished to a minor by the child’s parent (or stepparent), or to an individual by that person’s spouse.
  • Family members or legal guardians who provide personal care services must meet the same standards as providers who are unrelated to the individual.
  • Legal guardians of the person may provide waiver services to individuals since they are not financially responsible for the individual contingent upon MCO approval.
  • Implements and monitors individualized habilitation plans in such areas as self-care (i.e., grooming, toileting, eating, dressing), communication, socialization, safety, perceptual motor skills, functional arithmetic (i.e., numerals, money, measurement, time), behavioral management, vocational skills, domestic skills, community experience, and other specialized areas based on individualized habilitation goals under the supervision of a Qualified Intellectual Developmental Disability Professional (QP).

Qualifications

  • Staff must have a high school diploma or GED. Staff must meet client specific competencies as identified by the individual’s person-centered planning team and documented in the Person Centered Plan.
  • Staff must meet the requirements for paraprofessionals in 10A NCAC 27G.0200 be at least 18 years of age,
  • Staff must successfully complete First Aid, CPR, CPI and DMH/DD/SAS Core competencies and required refresher training.
  • Paraprofessionals providing this service must be supervised by a QP. Supervision will be provided according to supervision requirements specified in 10A NCAC 27G.0204 and according to licensure or certification requirements of the appropriate discipline.
  • Must have a criminal record check
  • All Corporation facilities will require that all applicants for employment disclose any criminal convictions. The impact of this information on a decision regarding employment will be based upon the offense in relationship to the job for which the applicant is applying. Statewide criminal records check; federal check will be completed if residing in state less than 5 years
  • A North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry with no substantiated findings of abuse or neglect listed as required in accordance with 10A NCAC 27G.0200.
  • If providing transportation, have a North Carolina or other valid driver’s license, a

safe driving record and an acceptable level of automobile liability insurance.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Intermediate knowledge of modern behavior modification principles and practices and cognitive behavior management techniques as they apply to habilitation programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.
  • Introductory knowledge of the behavioral sciences and allied disciplines involved in the evaluation, care, and habilitation of persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to implement effective and practical plans of treatment for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of clients and the quality of their treatment programs.
  • Ability to collect and analyze information utilized in making decisions concerning client habilitation plans.
  • Ability to exercise constructive discipline in a structured behavioral environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prepare reports.

Working Conditions

Physical demands include occasional sit; use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; lift up to 10 lbs.; vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
