JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Following the record-breaking success of A Greater Penn State for 21st Century Excellence— the University’s recently concluded $2.2 billion fundraising campaign— a Director of Campus Development is needed to engage alumni and friends as partners in supporting Penn State New Kensington, a campus offering four-year degree programs with award-winning faculty, undergraduate research, study-abroad programs, varsity sports, and student clubs and organizations.

Charged with guiding and overseeing all development and alumni relations for Penn State New Kensington, this position reports directly to an Assistant Vice President for University Development, University Park, and has a close working relationship with the campus chancellor. With experience not only in fundraising but also in management, and with an entrepreneurial and ambitious vision for Penn State New Kensington’s fundraising operation, the Director of Campus Development will:
- Articulate Penn State’s and the campus’ needs, ambitions, and values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, through excellent informal and formal communications, including written proposals
- Provide leadership and direction to all aspects of the development programs at the campus
- Identify and cultivate a pipeline of prospects for immediate and long-term cultivation
- Develop annual goals, plans, and budgets for a comprehensive, strategy-driven fundraising program
- Work collaboratively with campus leadership, campus advisory board, campaign committee volunteers, and central University Development staff to ensure fundraising success
- Build and foster relationships with increasingly diverse internal and external stakeholders
- Lead campus’ development efforts to successfully identify, cultivate and solicit alumni and friends
- Complete a total of twelve monthly visits with prospects and donors
- Manage a development budget
- Develop and present formal proposals
- Interpret research information pertinent to relationship building with potential donors
- Work collaboratively with campus leadership, staff, volunteers, and donors to create and implement plans to secure philanthropic gifts (at a $2,500 to $99,999 level), as well as major gifts ($100,000+)
- Travel throughout the region and across the country to pursue these strategies and build enduring relationships, tracked to a fixed and appropriately aggressive set of fundraising metrics
- Serve as an ambassador for the campus and its priorities and values
This position will be filled at a level 4 or level 5 , depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher plus 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 4 . Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
The successful candidate will also have:
- A track record of success in securing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals
- A dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build relationships with diverse communities
- Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education
- Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills
- Proven ability to self-motivate, and ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
- The capacity to think and act strategically
- Impeccable writing, presentation skills, and ability to utilize various technologies
- A record of successfully engaging with foundations and community stakeholders is a plus.
- A passion for higher education and an understanding of complex institutions
- A commitment to professional development, learning, and being mentored
Operation of a motor vehicle as part of the position’s duties and a valid driver's license are required. Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required.

Located thirty minutes from downtown Pittsburgh and educating approximately 500 students, Penn State New Kensington offers ten baccalaureate degree programs that can be completed at the campus. Students may also begin their first two years of course work for over 275 Penn State majors and finish their program at another Penn State campus. The campus is fully engaged with the community and is at the forefront of economic development efforts in downtown New Kensington with its Corner Launchbox and Digital Foundry.
