Director of Operations

Southern Berkshire Ambulance is hiring a Director of Operations. We are seeking a strong leader with proficiencies in communication, relationship management, strategic thinking, business, outstanding organizational skills, and ability to navigate complex situations with diplomacy and tact.

The Community

Southern Berkshire Ambulance’s (SBA) primary coverage area is the six towns of Alford, Egremont, Great Barrington, Monterey, Mount Washington, and Sheffield in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of southwestern Massachusetts. The area stretches over 175 square miles and is rich with natural and cultural attractions and quaint New England towns. Great Barrington is the largest town and commercial hub for the area. The full time population according to the 2020 census is 13,612 but the population frequently doubles with tourists and second home owners, primarily from New York City. The area has also seen considerable growth since the beginning of COVID with many part time residents relocating full time.

The Organization

Southern Berkshire Ambulance is a paramedic level, full service, not for profit agency. SBA provides the primary 911 coverage to six towns and ALS intercepts to outlying basic services. Due to the large geographical area many patients require extensive medical interventions in the field and during transport.

Fairview Hospital, a critical access designated hospital, is located in Great Barrington. They generate many interfaculty transfers taken by SBA to higher levels of care from a half hour to two hours away. SBA also provides transport for routine discharges and wait and returns for medical procedures for several nursing and rehab facilities.

SBA faces the same financial and staffing challenged shared by most EMS agencies across the country. It is expected that in order to meet the challenges, SBA will need to expand or diversify in the future. This may include municipal subsidies, increasing the region covered, or adding services such as community paramedicine or a chair car service.

Currently, two medic units are staffed 24/7. A third BLS ambulance is occasionally in service during peak demand if staffing is available. Each shift has a Shift Commander. Total call volume is approximately 3,500 annually. SBA has 15 full time and 20 part time employees.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements or have comparable education and experience.

  • 10+ years experience as a field paramedic
  • 5+ years experience in management
  • Experience in business financials which may or may not include EMS

Essential Duties

The Director of Operations reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for overall management and operations of the agency. A summary of responsibilities is listed. Many of the responsibilities are or may be delegated.

  • Recruits and manages all employees
  • Recommends policies to the Board of Directors and implements and enforces them when approved
  • Works with the BOD to determine what staffing is required to meet the needs of the communities and healthcare facilities served
  • Provides regular reports to the BOD
  • Ensures all equipment is purchased, maintained, tested, and certified in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and state regulations
  • Maintains all required licenses for SBA and ensure operations and patient care are performed in accordance with MA OEMS regulations
  • Full P&L responsibility. Creates an annual budget for approval by the BOD and works to control expenses in efficient ways
  • Oversees billing, ensures revenues are maximized, and identifies additional business opportunities
  • Establishes relationships with healthcare facilities to develop memorandums of understanding and contracts to ensure SBA’s resources are best utilized to meet the needs of patients, the facilities, and SBA
  • Works with neighboring EMS agencies and other emergency services to establish a unified, regional, efficient delivery of EMS
  • Creates and updates a strategic plan for the long term delivery and funding of EMS for SBA’s coverage area
  • While the primary responsibilities are management and administrative, the ideal candidate will be occasionally expected to work in the field as needed
