DSHS Operations Research Specialist

We are looking for a forward-thinking Operations Research Specialist to join the Adult Protective Services (APS) Division within Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (ALTSA). This position reports directly to the APS Deputy Director and has statewide responsibility for report development, research, data analysis, project analytics and is responsible for responding to the reporting needs and ad-hoc data requests of the APS Division and its key stakeholders.

APS investigates allegations of abandonment, abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and self-neglect of vulnerable adults and offers protective services. Our mission is to transform lives by promoting choice, independence and safety through innovative services.

Some of what you’ll do:


  • Analyze problems, fact patterns, trends, or status to accurately forecast potential outcomes and identify risks to inform decisions around program and policy change, quality improvement, staffing, strategic measures, and make recommendations to executive leadership and provide alternative solutions.
  • Conduct research, prepare and present complex data through statistical and narrative reports, graphs, charts and other formats provided to executive leadership, stakeholders, elected officials and community organizations, to make recommendations based on the information.
  • Develop forecasting models and projections for client and staffing demographics, succession planning and caseload trends and growth.
  • Present data to management and stakeholder groups.

Who should apply?
Professionals with a master’s degree Statistics, Science, Mathematics and/or Computer Science, or related field; and three years' demonstrated experience in one of the above areas. A Ph.D. may substitute for two years of the desired experience

OR

A Bachelor’s degree in in Statistics, Science, Mathematics and/or Computer Science, or related field; and five years of demonstrated experience in one of the above areas

Demonstrated experience in Statistics, Science, Mathematics and/or Computer Science or related field includes and may have been obtained concurrently:
  • Two years of experience building Power BI Data Models and Reports
  • Two years of experience using SAS or SQL for data management and analysis
  • Two years of experience preparing statistical analyses and tabulations of data for reports about social and/or health services or other large, person-level statewide databases
  • Two years of experience creating metrics or indicators derived from transactions, medical claims or encounters, service records, or similar data sources
  • Two years of experience creating dashboards using a combination of Excel, Power BI and/or Tableau
Note: A Ph.D. may substitute for two years of the desired experience.
