Position Description: *
Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s editor/writer writes, assigns, edits, and manages production of captivating mission-focused content for the Garden’s website and other projects. They help shape and tell the stories of the Garden as well as foster a love of nature among diverse readers. The successful candidate is an open, generative, and engaged professional with a journalist’s storytelling skills and a deep understanding of how to connect with varied audiences.
Responsibilities:
- Manage content calendar for and production of web and print articles, blog, plants in bloom spotlights, and web features. Together with director of Digital, develop story objectives and assignments.
- Keep abreast of ephemeral stories of the Garden’s collections and programs and opportunities to bring readers behind the scenes by maintaining close relationships with members of the Horticulture and Education teams.
- Work closely with content producers on Digital, Marketing, Membership, Interpretation, and Education teams to create and share vibrant content and messaging across the institution. Track timely stories and themes in weekly external communications meetings and Trello board.
- Research, write, and ghostwrite original content.
- Collaborate with staff and subject experts on blog posts and other varied projects.
- Collaborate with staff photographer on video projects and image assets.
- Assign articles and illustrations, source images, issue contracts, edit for publication.
- Surface seasonal content and stories, sharing content links with colleagues and maintaining fresh content on bbg.org.
- Generate ideas for original online features and opportunities to repurpose existing assets.
- Review and report on engagement analytics, using findings to shape future content.
- Perform web content markup and manage images in CMS.
- Maintain production calendars and project tracking, using personal judgment in prioritizing deadlines and scope of engagement for each project.
- Develop relationships with freelancers; contract and supervise outside writers, editors, photographers, and illustrators.
- Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Qualifications:
- Three or more years’ experience in editorial management in a comparable position
- Five or more years’ experience writing/producing content for digital media
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; master’s preferred. Degree in communications or journalism and/or background in horticulture or plant sciences preferred
- Specific knowledge about horticulture, gardening, botany, and natural science preferred
- Excellent assigning, editing, research, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and prioritize projects, balancing striving for perfection with meeting deadlines
- Ability to follow house style and match tone and language to purpose of publication
- Proficiency with basic web tools such as HTML, content management systems, design software, and photography
Compensation and Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience – $64,000 - $80,000
