Description

Are you a physicist or engineer skilled in computational methods for modeling electromagnetic interactions with novel metasurfaces and metamaterial structures?

Do you have keen interest in developing custom simulations and optimization procedures to solve problems involving the interplay between novel materials and electromagnetic fields using commercial computational packages?

Do you aspire to collaborate with skilled teammates to carry your solutions through the full cycle of design, fabrication, characterization, and prototyping?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

As a research scientist, you will join a team of computational and experimental staff members who are passionate about developing innovative solutions that can impact the future development and application of electromagnetic devices involving novel metasurface designs. Our team is committed to scientific excellence and continuous improvement in an agile environment.

We are seeking a creative scientist to help us mature existing projects and grow new ones by identifying emerging sponsor challenges demanding novel electromagnetic solutions. The scope of the projects will range from fundamental discovery through advanced prototype demonstration. As a member of our team, you'll contribute to research that tie numerical models to real-world transitioned technologies. Our team of specialists work closely with systems engineers and experimentalists to gain deeper insights into sensors, devices, and phenomena.

As an Electromagnetic Metastructure Modeling & Device Physicist, you will:

  • Leverage commercial computational tools to build simulations and develop numerical solutions for problems pertaining to the interaction of electromagnetic fields with novel metasurfaces and metamaterial structures with applications ranging from radio-wave through optical frequencies.
  • Extend established design principles and optimization procedures into application domains with poorly defined behaviors or with extreme parameters that challenge the state of the art.
  • Develop independent research and development concepts that demonstrate the potential of new and emerging technologies for revolutionary applications within the APL sponsor base.
  • Lead research efforts through the establishment of collaborative and diverse teams, present results in an effective and timely fashion, and mentor early career staff.
  • Work closely with APL program managers to engage potential sponsors for the purpose of incubating new programs.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Hold a PhD degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering.
  • Have 1+ experience building numerical models for solving electromagnetic problems using commercial tools such as CST and COMSOL running both on standalone machines and high-performance distributed clusters.
  • Have a record of creative application of physics knowledge and numerical methods to solve complex problems in electromagnetic field applications.
  • Write scientific programs in at least one high-level language (such as C, C++, or JAVA), in addition to MATLAB and/or PYTHON.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19. All staff members must provide proof of full vaccination or have an approved medical or religious accommodation by their start date.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...
  • Have significant experience in modeling multi-physics problems, for example using COMSOL.
  • Possess familiarity with tailoring EM fields to control reflection, transmission, and absorption by way of patterning surfaces and designing their effective material properties
  • Understand and can build models to mitigate the difficulties associated with multi-scale electromagnetics simulations
  • Write programs for use in parallelized computing environments using frameworks such as Open MPI or CUDA.
