Job Summary

There is one position that will be filled at the Engineering Technical Specialist II or III level, commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.

An Engineering Technical Specialist II or III in ET Engineering Standards – Substation Standards would be responsible for:

  • Leading substation standards innovation efforts in support of ET Reliability and Substation Construction
  • Program coordination for the development of substation standard drawings in Civil 3D, Inventor 3D and AutoCAD Electrical (ACADE).
  • Development and maintenance of the Substation and Protection Control Engineering Standards Manual – Autodesk and MicroStation
  • Development and maintenance of the Substation Physical Engineering Standards Manual – Autodesk and MicroStation
  • Development and maintenance of Autodesk and MicroStation design manuals
  • Program coordination for training initiatives for substation engineering standards using Autodesk, MicroStation, Substation Design Suite, and ETAP LV power system modeling.
  • Engineering Standards and Design Standards procedure coordination.
  • Review existing materials, components, and design standards for process improvements, cost savings, and help manage organizational change.
  • Develop and maintain substation engineering standards requirements for software platforms used for engineering efforts (MathCAD, Autodesk, MicroStation, ETAP) and issue purchase specifications for engineering software.
  • Engage in industry forums, and events (IEEE, SEE, SDS Design Consortium, CIGRE, etc.).
  • Engage with industry suppliers and manufacturers (plant/factory visits, substation visits) for assigned materials and components.
  • Lead planning and execution of substation engineering standard development projects and provide input into reliability project plans.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

Engineering Technical Specialist II - 3+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

Engineering Technical Specialist III - 5+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated competencies in applicable discipline.

  • Senior level knowledge of substation standardization in Autodesk with SDS toolkits
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as team project lead and provide guidance to less experienced engineers and technical employees.
  • Senior level knowledge of technical writing principles and document management strategies for large organizations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Strong personal computer skills.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Equally effective and strong when working independently or in team environment.
  • Proven decision-making skills.
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills.
  • Project management experience with new engineering software implementation for design and standards team.

In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline; or
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited); or
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
