Under the direct supervision of the Program Director- Explore, the Assistant Director - Explore Advising & Retention will serve on the Explore program leadership team charged with strategizing, planning, executing of the overall day-to-day operations of student support services inclusive of academic and career advising in addition to student success and retention of the Explore program. Students in the Explore program are in the essential stage of exploring interests, values, strengths, and long-term goals as they research and make decisions around their ASU journey and designing possible futures for themselves. Thus, it is pivotal that this role exhibits new ways of thinking about academic and career advising services to meet the needs of the exploring learner. This role will work closely with program staff and faculty on the design, implementation, and ongoing iteration of the full exploratory experience, focused on intentional exploration and decision-making and building a supportive community for students to explore.

The Assistant Director - Explore Advising & Retention also plays a critical role in the Work+ Program, which is designed to prepare student-employees for their future professional careers. As a key participant in the Work+ Program, the Assistant Director will serve as a career guide and mentor to working learner(s) they have been assigned to supervise. Additionally, the Assistant Director will be involved in providing working learners opportunities to build valuable work skills as well as facilitating their professional development.

Essential Duties

The Assistant Director - Explore Advising & Retention will have the responsibility to:

  • Lead the design and implementation of academic and career advising to provide triaged care that focuses on student success at the center of the model to support students and improve the retention rate in the Explore program;
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate academic and career advising professional staff and working learners by creating an organizational structure for onboarding, training and professional development;
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate working learners (student employees) by creating an organizational structure for onboarding, training and professional development as supported by Work+;
  • Lead efforts on the integration of complementary career advising strategies and practices into student support services;
  • Lead the gathering and assessing of data to conduct high level analysis to report trends and to forecast in the design of long and short term goals pertaining to student support services;
  • Communicate and align internal stakeholders on forecast assumptions, qualifying results based on data, and be able to contribute to new and existing program planning and development;
  • Co-develop, maintain, and implement college policies and procedures regarding advising, retention, or other academic support efforts;
  • Collaborate with Explore leadership team to build and execute outreach campaigns and events to reach university retention goals for students in the Explore program, particularly first-time, first-year students;
  • Liaise with internal and external partners to plan and/or attend other events or meetings to increase enrollment and retention;
  • Plan and review activities and operations of the department to ensure achievement of objectives and goals consistent with the mission of the University College;
  • Contribute to the greater Work+Learn team and engage in efforts and opportunities across the Work+Learn portfolio;
  • Work independently and as a part of the University College team by exercising professional judgment to serve as a knowledgeable resource in respect to ASU policy and procedures to ensure accurate output and processing;
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in creating and implementing retention and persistence strategies for undergraduate students.
  • Experience in applying student development/student learning theories and/or academic and/or career advising knowledge into student support services.
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and reporting on data to achieve identified goals and objectives.
  • Experience in PeopleSoft, Salesforce, social media, analytic dashboards, and Google Suite (or equivalent systems).
  • Experience in effectively managing, supervising, coaching and evaluating professional staff in an academic setting.
  • Experience being innovative and strategic as it relates to leading a unit/organization.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of the current challenges, trends, and effective strategies related to college student persistence and retention.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Leverage problem solving and decision making skills to establish and manage priorities.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard,monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
