Job description

The primary responsibility of an Eye Bank Technician is to surgically remove and preserve corneas or whole eyes, depending on the consent, from deceased donors. This work is usually completed in hospital, morgue or other healthcare facility settings, and requires frequent travel to medical facilities in Hilo. This is a very rewarding position but can be physically and emotionally strenuous. The individuals we seek must be comfortable examining and performing surgical procedures on deceased persons. They must also be accustomed to laboratory settings and will be trained to recover and distribute corneal tissue. Our technicians are medical professionals and continuing care providers who uphold the dignity of our donors and their families throughout every step of the recovery process. The individuals we select will learn and adhere to LEBH operating protocols, Eye Bank Association of America procedures, and all relevant state and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Manage case load based on priority.

· Coordinate donor access and transportation when needed.

· Review donor chart to determine preliminary suitability.

· Procure ocular tissue and perform all procedures associated with procurement, including but not limited to physical assessment, blood draw, ocular assessment, tissue evaluation.

· Determine donor eligibility and tissue suitability.

· Quality Control responsibilities to keep compliant with EBAA regulations and local/state regulations.

· Obtain donor chart and ensure completion prior to final release review.

· Clean instruments, wrap kits, and sterilize.

· Laboratory cleaning required based on set schedule.

· Distribution of ocular tissue.

· Inventory Management.

· Deliver packages.

· Perform additional duties as necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The position does have an office/laboratory setting, but the duties are also in offsite settings such as, but not limited to, healthcare facilities, morgues and mortuaries. Travel is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, crouch, push, pull, grasp and transport a minimum of 50lbs.

· Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time.

· Must be able to move to/from fax machine, scanner, copier, kitchen, restroom located outside of the office, and throughout local hospitals, healthcare facilities, mortuaries and morgues.

· Must be able to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand and wrist movement and coordination, including use of a keyboard and mouse.

· Must be physically and occasionally able to drive during an entire shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· A high school diploma or equivalent at minimum. Previous healthcare and/or laboratory experience is a plus.

· Must be able to successfully pass the required background check(s).

· Must possess a current driver’s license, car insurance, and reliable car.

· Must be able and available to work variable shifts.

· Must have ethical business practices and the mental and emotional fortitude to work effectively in situations where families are facing death and dying, terminal illness and tragic and/or sudden deaths.

· Must be fluent in the English language with excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to present ideas clearly and effectively in both presentation and one-to-one situations.

· Must be responsible, exercising sound judgment and independent initiative, and possess the acumen to identify situations that require consultation and/or approval from a supervisor.

·Must be computer literate, with the ability to work in Microsoft applications and Windows as well as other software.

· Must be able to achieve and maintain a high level of performance in a time-sensitive environment.

· Must be capable of adhering to the personnel handbook

Pay Structure: training rate is $15.00 per hour. Once signed off and training is complete, the pay structure transitions to case pay at $175.00 per case.
