Position Summary
Azimuth Corporation is looking for a mission-driven Fiber Technician to fill a potential role in support of a government research customer in the Washington, DC area. The idea candidate would possess a well-rounded research skill set and have prior experience supporting government research missions. Some of the responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities

  • Engage in basic and applied research that requires experience in Fiber Optic sensor design and construction, and the handling of optical fibers and cables.
  • Assist with laboratory and field experiments.
  • Collect and analyze data in support of ongoing research.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experienced Fiber Fabrication Technician or Equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years-experience for Level II, minimum 8 years-experience for Level III and minimum 15 years-experience for Level V sensor design and construction and the handling of optical fibers and cables
  • Very proficient in the use of standard fiber optic fusion splice machines and the techniques for transducer fabrication and sensor packaging.
  • Proficient in the use of regular and high-resolution Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), optical power meters, polarization analyzers, and other optical instrumentation.
  • Thorough knowledge of government requirements for the shipment and receiving of experimental equipment and systems.
  • Working Knowledge of mechanical design and assembly including the use of computer aided design (CAD) software to produce mechanical drawings.
  • Certified fiber optic technician, and a member of the FOA (Fiber Optic Association, Inc.)
  • Clearance Required (Secret): Applicants selected will be subject to a security clearance check and/or a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information

Physical Requirements / Travel

  • Must be able to work in a lab environment that includes high power lasers, vacuum systems, and clean rooms.
  • Must be able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in an office environment at a desk and computer.
  • Requires visual and dexterous acuity to perform small scale scientific experiments.
  • Requires the ability to operate lab tools and equipment and use a keyboard and mouse.
  • May travel ~10% to conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events. Some OCONUS may be required.
