Job Title: Instrument and Controls Telemetry Field Technologist
Location(s): Grand Junction, CO
Status: Full-Time
FLSA: Exempt
Hiring Range: $50,000 - $57,000/yr. The anticipated starting salary pay range of $ 50,000 - $57,000/yr with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience.

RSI EnTech, LLC is recruiting for an Instrument and Controls Telemetry Field Technologist. This position will function as one of a small team of technicians responsible for operation and maintenance of a remote telemetry environmental monitoring network installed at several Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management (DOE LM) sites located across the United States. Management and maintenance of this diverse network, referred to as the System Operations and Analysis at Remote Sites (SOARS) requires knowledge of environmental sensors, low voltage electronics, solar power, batteries, groundwater pumping, and a basic understanding of data communication networks. The SOARS program monitors well conditions, water temperature, remedial systems, building power, weather conditions, and more at over 20 DOE LM sites.
This position will be in the field 25% to 50% of the time. This travel will be nationwide, primarily in the western half of the US.
Primary responsibilities and essential functions:
- Management and maintenance of remote field installations of SOARS equipment, comprised of data loggers, meteorologic stations, transducers, flow meters, etc.
- Maintain knowledge of the site-specifics requirements and variables for assigned sites (unique sensors, age of sensors, data reporting needs, etc.).
- Review data collected by field equipment in a web portal, quality check incoming data and exercises judgement and discretion in grading the data quality.
- With advanced knowledge in software, site conditional equipment, etc. identify irregularities in data and determine cause of how in-the-field variables relates to data collected.
- Communicate with other teams and site leads to describe how collected data relates to in-the-field variables.
- Install, maintain, replace, and manage emergency repairs of SOARS equipment at assigned DOE LM sites.
- Independently plans assigned field work and travel needed to install, manage, and maintain SOARS field equipment at assigned DOE LM sites.
- Compile fiscal estimates for new or upgrades to existing SOARS equipment.
- Purchase SOARS equipment, following approval process.
- Program field data loggers and evaluate existing programs.
- Prepare a field log of all field activities, write trip reports, and transpose notes into database following travel.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures.
- Develop work specific Safety and Health documents (job safety analysis, all applicable forms for work authorization i.e. confined space entry, penetration permit, ladder inspection, heat stress etc.).
- Operate and ensure maintenance of SOARS field vehicles according to training and GSA standards.
- Maintain stewardship over various field tools (power tools, trailer, UTV, field laptop, sat phone, AED etc.)
- Other duties as assigned
Work experience, skills, and capabilities needed:
- Experience with PLCs, programing logic, and troubleshooting data capture logic in data logger programs.
- Experience using data loggers and data logger software.
- Experience with low-voltage electrical systems (batteries and solar)
- Experience configuring telecommunication equipment (400mHz, 900 mHz, or GHz and cellular) for remote telemetry.
- Ability to independently track and organize work tasks to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties
Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency required:
- Basic language, mathematical and communication skills.
- Experience using MS Word and MS Excel to create documentation, analyze data, and track work.

Required Education and Years of Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation and Controls, Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related field.
OR
Associate’s degree in Instrumentation and Controls, Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or related field with a minimum of 4 years’ of related experience. Experience in lieu of education will be considered.
Desirable qualifications, experience, or proficiencies of the ideal candidate:
- Exposure to Campbell Scientific LoggerNet software
- Experience reviewing collected data to identify and solve equipment installation issues
- Awareness of Aquatic Informatics AQUARIUS software or other environmental data software.
- Experience in the related fields of environmental instrumentation and data collection.
- A willingness to learn new concepts and skills related to this position.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office and applications
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
The employee exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Able to travel on uneven ground for several miles (2-4 miles) per day under adverse weather conditions. Much of the traveling is up and down hills. Able to work in hot, cold, windy, and sometimes wet conditions. Able to work alone for several hours per day in the field. The employee is regularly required handle or feel, to reach, and communicate. The employee is frequently required to move about and maintain various positions. The employee must have the ability to perceive the environment and observe technical material and emails.
