POSITION SUMMARY

Under the authority of the Captain serves aboard a U.S. Coast Guard Inspected Small Passenger Vessel under contract to the National Park Service (NPS) directly supervising and training other crewmembers in the practice of Good Seamanship, Marine Safety & Security, Watch Quarter & Emergency Station Bill, and Customer Service in a manner that enhances the Interpretive Experience of our guests and Respects the Planet.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Directs other crewmembers and encourages others to follow National Park Service directives, and Alcatraz Cruises policies, that enhance the Interpretive Experience of quests to the Golden Gate National Park Recreational Area (GGNRA) and Respects the Planet.
• Ensures that onboard crew work and passenger environment is as safe and pleasant as possible.
• Customer Service: Assists guests and answers questions in regard to Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, or San Francisco attractions and provide guests with an Inescapable Experience.
• Preparation of vessels(s) for operational readiness.
• Stands Underway Watches as Helmsman or Lookout and performs other vessel navigational functions when needed by the Captain.
• Stands watch as Deck Safety & Security Officer
• Tends mooring lines, and supervises others, during vessel (un)docking maneuvers and while alongside the dock.
• Train new hire First Officers, Deckhands, Vessel Maintenance crew, Snack Bar attendants and any employee that is considered in a safety sensitive position.
• Regularly participate and lead in Emergency drills required by the USCG, but not limited to: Man Overboard, Abandon Ship, Fire Response, Bilge Dewatering, Security, and Spill Response.
• Performs safety functions assigned on the Watch Quarter & Emergency Station Bill assignments and serves as the Incident Commander On-Scene In-Charge during On-Board Emergencies.
• Familiar with use of ground tackle, emergency gear, deck gear, and vessel emergency plans/response.
• Tends gangway, and supervises others, in passenger handling procedures and requirements.
• Assists in the queuing and pre-boarding of guests in the entrance lines.
• Makes sure vessel personnel follow safety procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, Safety Alerts, regular assigned duties, and company policies at all times.
• Performs and oversees others in Housekeeping Chores for vessel and facility (vessel sanitizing/cleaning, washing inside & out)
• Perform general vessel and facility maintenance (Lubricates machinery and equipment, vessel preventative maintenance; repair to vessel/facility systems and equipment as needed)
• Prepare vessels for, and participate in, USCG inspection
• Assists and oversees transferring of pumping sewage and water from all facilities.
• Throughout the day, at beginning and t ending of shifts; will maintain clean passenger and employee spaces (i.e. restrooms, trash, common areas, pilot house, gangways, crew areas, snack bars, engine room, bilge compartments, etc.)
• Engine room and all below deck checks and logging
• Coaches or trains deckhands & First Officers in the practice of Good Seamanship.
• Maintain licensing (TWIC, MMC, 1st Aid/CPR, FCC)

Requirements:

• U.S. Coast Guard Inland Masters (100 ton) or equivalent Required
• TWIC
• FCC
• High school diploma required
• 1-year marine work experience required
• Customer service experience is helpful
• Knowledge of foreign language is helpful

Job Type: Full-time
