Position Title: Fitness Instructor

Position Purpose

Works under the supervision of the Director or designee. Instructs members and guests on the proper use of the cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercise equipment. Monitors participants in the fitness area.

Key Responsibilities[List of material responsibilities and essentials duties which must be completed in achieving the objectives of the position]

  • Adheres to the Behavioral Expectations Agreement.
  • Demonstrates positive and professional personal relations in dealing with members and guests.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with co-workers, supervisors, and other members of the staff.
  • Greets new members and guests and is friendly, outgoing, and personable.
  • Orients new members and guests on proper technique for the cardiovascular and strength equipment to ensure that members receive the highest level of expertise and service.
  • Instructor creates exercise programs and performs fitness assessments according to current exercise testing and prescription standards.
  • Instructor uses assigned time to monitor workouts for consistency, improvement, and compliance.
  • Speaks with members to ensure that the member is happy with current status.
  • Makes changes to members’ workouts as necessary.
  • Works with members on exercise programs through direct and indirect communications.
  • Monitors all individuals for proper technique and use of equipment, making corrections as needed.
  • Perform fitness assessments, orientation, and design exercise program based on member’s abilities and goals.
  • Responsible for following up with assigned members in terms of assisting with compliance and attainment of goals.
  • Responsible for exercise prescription and for individual and/or group instruction on proper use of equipment. Responsible for general cleanliness of the fitness area and locker rooms.
  • During down time, instructor make use of time by performing the required cleaning/maintenance duties and tasks.
  • Take blood pressures and heart rates.
  • Performs body fat measurements
  • Enters workout into the computer for use with the TechnoGym equipment. • Attends mandatory staff meetings.
  • Accurately instructs new members and guests on proper use of the TechnoGym and other strength training and/or cardiovascular exercises.
  • Enforces policies and procedures of fitness center for member safety. 5449 (Init:08/17ms; Rev; 2/18sn Rev: 4/18sn; Rev 11/18sn ) (Please refer to electronic document management system for the most current revision)
  • Responsible for notifying director or manager with any changes of schedule at least 24 hours in advance if possible, and responsible for finding own substitute.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or GED Equivalent or college level degree
Certification/Licensure: CPR certification through American Heart Association: BLS or Heartsaver with AED or American Red Cross with AED.
Experience: At least 1-year experience within the wellness/fitness industry.

Preferences: Education:
BS/BA in Exercise Physiology or related field. Certification/Licensure: A national certification through ACSM, ACE, or NSCA. Experience: Two years’ experience within the wellness/fitness industry.

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to clean fitness area and move equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to assist members with lifting at times.
  • Ability to lead exercise which may involve continuous physical exertion with repetitive movement, self-manipulative, pushing and pulling of limbs, bending, lifting, stepping, and standing for much of shift.
  • Must be able to communicate related exercise instructions.
  • to comprehend educational material in the subject areas of basic exercise physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, basic nutrition, solve and interpret basic math skills, (add, subtract, multiply, etc.) and exercise performance in order to successfully pass the instructors written examination with a score of at least 80%.
  • Must possess the ability to memorize exercise routines and interpret directions, which requires the use of long and short-term memory.
