Hitchiner produces castings in hundreds of different alloys for a broad spectrum of global markets and customers that include the leaders in the automotive, aerospace, and other industries.Primary Function:
Employ Fluorescent Penetrant, Grain Inspection, X-Ray (includes both film and/or digital radiography) and/or Nondestructive Test Operations to inspect castings to required techniques, standards and specifications. Read X-Ray film and/or digital images to identify casting defects and by severity of defect, as applicable. There are seven levels within this position, which are differentiated by education, experience, independence, certification and responsibility to lead and direct others.
Tools and Equipment:
X-Ray machines, acquisition system, review system, film developing unit, black light lamps, densitometers, film step wedges, penetrameters, shim blocks, light meters, calipers, hoist, x-ray collector, proto Laue software, etch tanks, Geiger counter, Stereoscope, microscope, rulers, micrometers, fixtures, computers, film viewers, various dip tanks containing emulsifier, penetrant, water, ferric acid, phosphoric acid, anodic solution and other solutions, drying unit, powder application unit, baskets, timers. Cast metal parts is the primary product to be tested. Ceramic Cores and other like material may also be inspected.
Positions and Levels:
Grade 4:
Grain Etch Operator – CB805: Training and must be able to learn and demonstrate proper Grain Etch visual inspection.
FPI Operator – CB720: Must be able to learn and demonstrate proper operation of Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection equipment.
X-Ray Operator – CB760: Must be able to learn and demonstrate proper operation of Xray Inspection equipment utilizing film and/or digital.
FPI Level I – CB721: Must pass a Level I in Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection testing.
Grain Etch Inspector Level I – CB806: Must demonstrate competency and complete the required hours of experience and learning and pass Level I requirements in visual grain inspection.
Grade 5:
FPI Level II – CB722: Must pass a Level II in Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection testing.
Grain Etch Inspector Level II – CB807: Must demonstrate competency and complete the required hours of experience and learning and pass Level II requirements in visual grain inspection and Laue procedures.
X-Ray Level I – CB761: Must pass a Level I examination in Radiographic testing utilizing film and/or digital.
Grade 6:
NDT Level I – TO903: Must pass a Level II in Liquid Penetrant testing AND Level I Radiographic testing.
Grade 8:
X-Ray Level II – CB762: Must pass a Level II examination in Radiographic testing.
FPI Level III – CB723: Must pass a Level III in Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection testing.
Grain Etch Inspector Level III – CB808: Must demonstrate competency and complete the required hours of experience and learning and pass Level III requirements in visual grain inspection and Laue procedures.
Grade 9:
NDT Level II – TO906: Must pass a Level II in Liquid Penetrant testing AND Level II Radiographic testing.
Grade 10:
X-Ray Level III – CB763: Must pass a Level III examination in Radiographic testing utilizing film and/or digital.
Grade 11:
Working NDT Level III – TO900: Must pass a Level III Radiographic testing utilizing film and/or digital AND Level II or higher in at least one other applicable NDT discipline.

Candidate for the position will have a number of attributes that are not easily measured but which will be looked for during the interview process. Any candidate must commit to work varied schedules required, including extended work days and weekends to support the needs of the department. Some travel may be required for training purposes.
Direction of Others:
Assist in the training of others for applicable NDT operations as needed but required for Levels II and III.
Working Procedure:
The following are the usual major job duties, but this job description does not preclude the performance of other duties as assigned by the supervisor:
Operator/Trainee
- Work under the direct observation and guidance of a level II or Level III
- Operate all equipment as described
- Must be able to function well as a member of a team
- Receive parts from finishing or other areas. Ensure all operations are complete and are signed off.
- Follow work instructions, and determine parameters that need to be used for a job per outlined
- Retrieve all applicable specifications, techniques, and folders necessary for jobs.
- Must follow all safety requirements of job as outlined on the job safety card
- Perform other duties or tasks related to the method and as assigned by the supervisor
- Complete all paperwork associated with the job. Correctly maintain all forms and instruction sheets
- Maintain a clean and orderly working environment
- Inform your supervisor about problems that occur
- May be required to handle hazardous waste by collecting and transferring the waste into proper containers at satellite storage areas or storage areas and assuring that the containers are properly inspected, labeled, and closed as required. Must follow correct instruction for handling hazardous waste and report any deviations to supervisor immediately. Must attend yearly instruction in hazardous waste handling and review of current procedures if job duties could affect non-compliance.
- Perform all duties of Operator
- Perform all required system calibrations may include but not limited to system standardization, qualification tests, system capability checks, daily process controls, bench chemistry analysis of acidic and caustic solutions (e.g. titrations, PH, etc.)
- Meet all requirements/qualifications for level you are in
- Pass general, specific, and practical examinations
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Process parts to the NDT method specifications and document results
- Receive guidance or supervision of level 2 or 3 in the method when necessary
- May not accept or reject parts.
- Perform all duties of Operator and level I
- Provide training and direct observations to operators/trainees and documenting trainee hours
- Provide guidance and supervision to Level I’s when necessary
- Have the skills and knowledge to set up and standardize equipment and maintain test results conduct system performance according with applicable process standard
- Have the skills and knowledge to interpret work instructions, techniques, customer standards and other instructional documents
- Interpret indications and evaluate discontinuities per applicable standards for acceptance or rejection, and document results
- Develop techniques when necessary
- Meet all requirements/qualifications for level you are in
- Pass general, specific, and practical examinations
- Perform all duties of Operator, Level I and Level II
- Provide training and direct observation to operators/trainees and documenting trainee hours
- Provide guidance and supervision to Level I’s and Level II’s when necessary
- Pass general, specific and practical examinations
- Shall be familiar with the codes, standards, and other contractual documents that control the method as utilized
- Provide On the Job training to Level Is and IIs
- Provide formal training to Level Is and Level IIs
- Support with personnel examinations when necessary
- Capable of conducting technical adequacy over-inspection of level Is and Level IIs
- Ensure departmental tasks are being completed per written procedures
- Supporting Level III Examiners to ensure the proper performance of the NDT process including supporting audits, work reviews and spot checks.
- Support NDT procedure and work instruction development
- Support NDT technique development/review and approval
- Requires sufficient strength and physical dexterity to frequently lift up to 35 lbs.
- Vision requirement of 20/20 or better in at least one eye, per the J1 standard as well as color perception.
A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
