LIU Post is one of the most beautiful, historic and scholarly settings in the country. Our 307-acre campus is located on the north shore of Long Island, in the Village of Brookville. The Campus is just 50 minutes from the corporate and entertainment capital of the world, New York City.

The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Management houses BFA programs in Acting and Musical Theatre, and a BA Program in Theatre (with a concentration in Production and Design or Performance). The undergraduate curriculum is founded on the premise that a theatre artist must understand the relationship between theory and practice, and is sourced in a cohesive pedagogical narrative that includes innovative training along with a physical approach to heightened texts.

POSITION: The Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Management at LIU Post seeks an experienced General Manager for Full-Time, (12-month) permanent appointment. The General manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the production component of the Academic Program in Theatre. They act as a liaison between the Department, the students, professional artists, and outside organizations. The General Manager is responsible for allocating and managing the budget as well as supervising contracted guest artists and theatre staff. The General Manager assigns and manages each Theatre Department student ’ s technical crew contract every semester. The Post Theatre Company produces roughly 12 productions annually for a growing student body of over 200 majors.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of two black box theatres (one 60 and one 120 seat house), six rehearsal spaces, technical equipment and the presentation of ~14 productions annually.
  • Facilitate the hiring of professional guest directors and designers each semester and issue contracts to all professional artists and ensure that all contractual obligations specified through said agreements are fulfilled.
  • Act as a liaison between professional artists (directors, lighting, set and costume designers, musical directors, choreographers and musicians) and the University, as well as professional artists and student actors, managers and crews.
  • Assign and supervise departmental contracts (including stage managers, assistant stage managers, box office staff, house managers, electrics, props, scenery and wardrobe run crews, light and sound board operators, dramaturges, assistant directors and designers, props gatherers, props managers, transportation personnel and company coaches) for ~280 students each semester.
  • A s the departmental contract supervisor and instructor, supervise and evaluate student performance from an academic and practical perspective. Directly supervise student staff including Company Manager, Stage Managers, Assistant Stage Managers, House Managers, and Box Office Managers and staff who are serving on production crews for academic credit.
  • Allocate and administer the departmental budget. Distribute budget among personnel, scenery, props, costumes, lighting, sound, royalties, rentals, management, publicity, etc. Oversee all financial transactions and account for all expenses.
  • Schedule & supervise production, faculty/staff and season committee meetings and events.
  • Generate, organize and implement departmental calendar including rehearsal schedules, meetings, design and publicity deadlines, special events, academic presentations, etc.
  • Supervise theatre staff, including Costume Shop Supervisor, Technical Director, Master Electrician, guest directors and designers, and student staff.
  • Develop and implement company policies for students and staff.
  • Oversee all aspects of publicity for Department productions & events.
  • Supervise an average of 100 evening and weekend technical and dress rehearsals throughout the academic year.
  • Secure performance rights for all productions and ensure that all contractual obligations specified through royalty agreements are fulfilled.
  • Manage all aspects of senior showcases in Manhattan.
  • Manage all aspects of Department participation in the American College Theatre Festival, when applicable.
  • Recruit, hire and supervise all Department work-study and part-time student employees.
  • Organize presentations by guest speakers and workshops and panels by guest artists
  • Coordinate annual Department alumni event to ensure a networking opportunity for the current graduating class with recent successful graduates working in the field.
  • Responsible for hiring photographers and videographers and managing the media for each production to create a comprehensive archive of all departmental work.
  • Oversee concessions operation including stock and sales.
  • Oversee all aspects of box office operations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in theatre (with a concentration in: acting, directing, production & design, education or arts management) plus professional experience.
  • The General Manager must have a comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of the performing arts; from the processes of acting, directing and designing, to the technical knowledge of electrics, sound, properties and carpentry, and the structure of box office, management and front of house systems and policies.
  • The General Manager must be able to relate equally well to students, academic personnel, and professional artists.
